I slapped him on the back and whispered, “You need to do something before Emily makes a scene.” I excused myself and headed toward the bar where Camille and her husband, Dane, were hanging out.

“You two having a good time?” I asked as I approached them and shook Dane’s hand.

“Not as much as I could be if I could hear what they were saying over there.” Camille gestured toward the group I’d just left. “That looks all sorts of scandalous.”

“You have no idea. It’s definitely safer over here.” I chuckled.

The bartender came over, and I ordered another whisky. Once I had my drink, I took a sip and turned around to observe Luke and the people around him. It was impossible to miss how uncomfortable everyone looked. It made me wonder if I needed to chat with him on Monday about how his actions could affect the firm. It felt hypocritical to say anything since I had my own thing going on with a subordinate. However, unlike Luke, I wasn’t married.

“Hey, Declan’s here.” Camille nodded toward the doors.

My head turned toward the doors, and my breath caught as he entered the ballroom. He wore a slim-fitting black suit with a gray turtleneck underneath instead of a dress shirt and tie. His chestnut hair was gelled and styled perfectly to the side, and his jaw was covered with just the right amount of stubble, which begged me to run my lips over it.

He smiled brightly when his eyes met mine, and he made his way to us. “Bossman!” He shook my hand, but the gesture felt wrong. It left me wishing I could pull him into my arms and kiss him in front of everyone. One day, maybe I could, but the middle of the office holiday party wasn’t the place for that sort of declaration. We didn’t need to become a spectacle like Luke and Emily.

“I’m glad you could make it,” I replied, taking another drink of the smooth alcohol.

“Declan, this is my husband,” Camille interjected. “Dane, this is our newest attorney, Declan Rivers.”

“Nice to meet you, Dane.” Declan shook his hand. “Your wife is one of my favorite people around here.”

“One of?” Camille gasped playfully.

“Fine. You’re my favorite,” Declan corrected and gave me a subtle wink.

Dane chuckled. “She’s had nothing but great things to say about you too.”

“So, where’s this boyfriend of yours?” Camille asked, scanning the room as though she might have missed someone walking in with Declan. “I was looking forward to meeting him.”

I threw back the rest of my drink, wondering how Declan was going to respond to our coworker.

Declan looked at me quickly but then said to Camille, “Yeah, I know. Unfortunately, he had his own work thing going on tonight.”

“That’s too bad. Maybe he can meet us during one of our happy hours soon.” She frowned.

“Maybe.” Declan shrugged. “Now I need to order a drink.

I placed my glass on the bar. “I should probably go make my rounds.”

“Okay. Catch you later, Sean,” Declan replied.

After talking to almost everyone in attendance, I was desperate to get back to my man. I looked around the ballroom and saw him talking to Eli and Brent from accounting. He glanced up as if he could sense me watching him, and our eyes locked.

“Help,” he mouthed as Eli held Brent’s attention.

I pulled my phone from my pocket and sent him a text:

Meet me in the lobby

Once I hit send, I turned around to wait for him outside the ballroom. The second Declan walked through the doors, I pulled him into the utility closet I stood in front of.

“What are we doing in here?” He chuckled.

“I thought you wanted my help?” I nibbled at his ear and then kissed a path down his neck.

“You’re right.” He let out a breath. “Looks like I need to thank you for rescuing me.”

He dropped to his knees and made quick work of my slacks. My head fell back against the door the moment he took me into his mouth. It was definitely the best holiday party I’d been to.
