“Yeah? You want to come be a private barista and bartender for Fallon and me today while we study for the bar?” I poured my coffee.

“I would if I didn’t have to work this afternoon. Those secret agents look really hot in their suits and I wouldn’t mind watching them all day.”

“Yeah, they do,” I agreed with a knowing smile as I added creamer to my coffee.

When Fallon first got his security detail, I wondered what it would be like to have Agent Rhett Davis put his hands all over me. Little did I know he was putting his hands all over Fallon in the same way I’d wanted. It was cool. Fallon and Rhett were now engaged and getting married in a couple of months. What started as a forbidden love affair would soon become their forever. As for me? I wasn’t sure when or if I’d ever find someone. I was more of a one-night stand kinda guy, at least since Fallon and I stopped fucking around. I’d actually never had a serious relationship. I wasn’t opposed to them. I had just been focused on my education. Now, I was studying for the bar and working for a promotion to junior associate. Once I met those goals, maybe then I would look for something a little more serious.

Taking a seat at the small table, the conversation turned to Fallon and Rhett’s pending nuptials.

“Speaking of Fallon and his hot agent. How are they doing with wedding planning?”

“As far as I know, good. Fallon’s mom is doing most of it.”

Sam stood to make herself another cup of coffee. “Those guys are lucky to have found each other. It’s like a real-life romance novel.”

“Yeah,” I agreed, my thoughts drifting to my own uncertain romantic future. “I wonder when—or if—I’ll find someone like that.”

She leaned against the kitchen counter. “It’s okay to put yourself out there and let things fall into place, you know?”

I nodded. “You’re right. I just need to figure out the right balance between chasing my dreams and, well, having a life.”

She raised an eyebrow. “Who said you can’t have both? Maybe the perfect someone will stroll into your life when you least expect it.”

“Here’s hoping.” I raised my coffee cup in a mock toast.

She raised her mug and mimicked the motion against mine. “You will.”

Stepping off the elevator,I noticed a Secret Service agent where he stood down the hallway outside Fallon’s door. I wasn’t sure who he was, but he was tall, had a chiseled jaw and, I would bet, strong biceps under his black suit. The one I’d seen walking the perimeter of the building wasn’t bad either.

The agent at the door nodded in greeting as I approached, and then I knocked on Fallon’s door. It swung open a few seconds later.

“Hey, man! Come in.” Fallon grinned.

I stepped into the lavish condo, and he shut the door behind us. “Thanks. How are you?”

“Good. Ready to take this fucking bar exam already. What about you?”

“As ready as I’ll ever be.” I set my bag on his couch. “But working on a case with Sean Ashford has added a whole new level of pressure for me.”

“You’re the one who wanted to work for him.” Fallon chuckled as he headed for the kitchen, and I followed.

“Can you blame me?” I smirked, picturing his salt and pepper hair, smoldering brown eyes, and strong jaw.

“Don’t you say it.”

“What?” I grinned.

“We aren’t talking about how hot my uncle is.”

Sean wasn’t Fallon’s uncle by blood, but a long-time family friend. That didn’t stop Fallon from acting horrified anytime I mentioned that I found Sean attractive. “But you admit he’s hot?”

“Dude.” He opened the fridge and pulled out two bottles of water. He tossed me one. “I don’t look at him that way.”

“But I do.” I waggled my eyebrows. We walked back to the living room, and I asked, “Where’s Rhett?”

He had to be in the condo somewhere because I hadn’t spotted any other agents inside Fallon’s place. That only happened when Rhett was home.

“He’s in the bedroom, I think.”
