“I know, and thank you.”
I blinked. Morgan Ashford said thank you to me? “You’re welcome. Can I … buy you a coffee?”
She snorted. “Youwant to buymea coffee?”
“Yes,” I replied. I wanted to say so much more, but at the moment, I knew it would fall on deaf ears.
She stared at me for a beat and then lifted a shoulder. “Okay.”
As we stood in line to order, I couldn’t keep my thoughts to myself. “Listen, I know you don’t exactly trust me, but I want you to know that I care about your dad. A lot.”
“Yeah, sure.” She rolled her eyes.
I could feel frustration bubbling up inside me, but I pushed it down, determined to stay calm. “Look, I get it. You’re just looking out for him, and I respect that. But I’m not some gold digger trying to take advantage of your dad. I love him, Morgan. And I’ll do everything in my power to make him happy.”
For a moment, there was silence between us. Then, unexpectedly, Morgan let out a sigh, her shoulders slumping ever so slightly. “Fine,” she conceded, her voice softer. “Maybe I’ve been a little too quick to judge.”
I couldn’t help but feel a surge of relief wash over me. Maybe, just maybe, there was hope for us yet. “Thank you,” I said sincerely, offering her a tentative smile. “I promise, I’ll do everything I can to prove myself to you.”
Morgan nodded, a hint of a smile tugging at the corners of her lips. “I’ll hold you to that.”
After we got our coffees, we parted ways. She got into a rideshare and I walked back to the office, went straight to Sean’s office, and placed the paper cup on the desk in front of him. Then I sat in the chair in front of his desk and took a sip of my vanilla hazelnut latte.
“I ran into Morgan just now.”
His eyes widened. “You did? What happened?”
“I think everything is going to work out.”
I didn’t mean only with Morgan but also with the office knowing we were dating. I had a good feeling that all the pieces were falling into place. Now I just needed to convince my mom to move to Boston permanently.

“Declan, can you come here for a minute?” I called from the doorway of my office.
It was quiet, and I assumed most of the staff had left for the evening, but even when people were around, I no longer cared if they saw me talking to him. We had been the topic of conversation for a few days when word spread that we were together. At least until Emily announced she was pregnant with Luke Nolan’s baby. After that, everyone forgot about us because it wasn’t as juicy of a story. It seemed as long as cases continued to be assigned on a rotating basis and Declan didn’t receive preferential treatment, no one really cared.
“Be right there,” he called back.
I moved back to my desk and sat on the edge with my arms crossed over my chest. A few seconds later, he walked in, and his eyes sparkled when he saw me. A couple hours earlier, I’d taken off my suit jacket and tie and rolled up my sleeves. I could only assume he liked the look on me as much as I liked it when he did the same.
“Please tell me my fantasy of getting punished by my boss is finally coming true.”
“Anyone out there still?”
He shook his head enthusiastically. “Nope, we’re the only two left.”
“Maybe you should close the door, just in case.”
He swung it closed, locking it for good measure, and then sauntered over to me. When he was within arm’s reach, I grabbed his hand and tugged him toward me.
“I’ve been wanting to fuck you over my desk for a while.”
He gasped, and I crushed my lips to his.
“Are you going to let me?” I asked when we finally pulled apart.
