“In-laws are that bad?”

She lifted a shoulder. “Mine is. She thinks her son is still a child, and I feel like I’m walking on eggshells in my own house.”

“Sounds horrible.”

“You have no idea.”

Camille walked away, presumably to get her things ready, and I quickly finished the document I was working on and saved it. It was ready for Sean’s review, but since he wasn’t in the office, there was nothing more I could do, and a drink did sound nice.

“Ready?” I asked as I stopped by Camille’s desk.

“Yep.” She stood and grabbed her purse.

We went to the elevators and took it down to the ground floor before walking outside. The fall air was turning crisp, and I pulled my coat tighter around myself. Thankfully, The Backyard wasn’t that far down the street and, once inside, the warmth hit my cheeks. I shrugged out of my jacket and followed Camille to a high-top table in the bar section.

“So, is this a hard alcohol night or just beer?” I asked as we slid onto the chairs.

“Margaritas for me.”

“Oh, plural.” I chuckled.

“Yeah, I need more than one.”

“Your mother-in-law is that bad?”

“Her intentions are good, but I can only handle so much.”

“When does she leave?”

When the waitress came over, Camille ordered a margarita, and I ordered a Stella. Once the server left, Camille responded, “She doesn’t leave for another week.”

“Oh, damn.”

“I know.” She groaned. “She’s been here a week already. Thankfully, I’ve been working most of the time.”

Even though I had no clue what it was like to have an in-law, I’d seen movies and TV shows that depicted them to be horrible. I hoped the person I ended up with didn’t feel that way about my mom. She was a saint, and when she called to check on me, she made sure to ask if I was taking care of myself. I knew she meant well.

“The only good thing,” Camille continued, “is that my house is staying clean.”

I barked out a small laugh. “That’s a plus then.”

“Yeah, I guess.”

A few minutes later, the waitress returned with our drinks, and Camille and I didn’t hesitate to take sips. Camille’s was much longer than mine, though.

“All right. Enough about my mother-in-law. What’s new with you?”

I’m fucking our boss. Well, fucked. Twice. Or he fucked me, really.“Nothing much. Just the usual shit.”

“How was your date on Monday?”

“It went well.” I beamed, thinking about Sean and how it had been so much more than a date.

“Did you get lucky?” I cocked a brow and Camille went on. “Not to pry, but I’m not getting any while my husband’s mom is here.”

I chuckled. “Yeah, I got some.”

“I’m jealous.” We both took sips of our drinks. “I think Sean is getting some too.”
