The following morning,Declan and I slept in as we planned. After we finally climbed out of bed and dressed, I made us coffee while he warmed up a pan of cinnamon rolls Jasper had made.
“I wish you could stay all day.” I handed him a steaming mug of liquid caffeine. “If I’d planned better, I would have told Morgan that I was seeing you, and we could have invited your mom over and all had lunch together.”
“Are you ready for Morgan to know?”
I shrugged. “Ryan already does, and I’d be surprised if he hasn’t already spilled the beans. Besides, I’m tired of keeping us a secret from her.”
Declan gave me a soft smile. “Maybe you can plan something soon.”
The phone that was connected to the concierge desk rang, interrupting anything else I was going to say.
“Hello,” I answered.
“Mr. Ashford, your son and daughter are on their way up.”
When I first moved into this building, I put Ryan and Morgan on my approved visitor list so the attendants didn’t have to get my permission to allow them up to my condo every time they came over. Suddenly, I worried it hadn’t been the best idea.
“Thank you, Peter. Merry Christmas.”
“Merry Christmas, sir.”
I disconnected the call and glanced at Declan. “Looks like that meeting is going to happen sooner rather than later. Ryan and Morgan are on their way up.”
As soon as the words left my mouth my door swung open, and they both exclaimed, “Merry Christmas!”
As they crossed the threshold, they both stopped in their tracks, their gazes landing on Declan.
“What are you doing here?” Morgan asked him.
“Uh …” He looked at me with a worried expression.
“Have a seat,” I suggested. “And we can chat.”
Ryan remained quiet and sat in one of the high-back chairs that flanked the couch. I wasn’t worried about him because he already knew Declan and I were together. But Morgan seemed less than thrilled, which I found odd.
“I’m surprised I missed your beater down in the parking garage. That thing sticks out like a sore thumb,” she said as she walked past me and Declan, her arms full of gifts. She placed them under the tree and took a seat opposite her brother.
“Morgan, there’s no reason to be rude,” I admonished.
“I’m not being rude, but why are you here on Christmas? Don’t you work for my dad?” she sassed.
I had no idea why she was acting the way she was or what her problem was with Declan.
“Wait. Is he thefriendwho borrowed the Escalade?” Ryan asked.
I nodded.
“You let him borrow Mom’s car?” Morgan shrieked.
I grimaced at Morgan’s high-pitched tone. “He needed a vehicle.”
“Maybe I should leave.” Declan stood.
I got up too. “You don’t have to.”
I turned back to Morgan and noticed she was staring at Declan’s arm. It took only a second for me to realize she was looking at the watch.
“He’s who you bought the Rolex for?” I could see the moment she realized what that meant. “Are you fucking kidding me? He’s the guy you’re dating?”
