“So, what now? Or are you tapping out?” he asked.
I looked around and spotted a sign for an indoor golf place down the block. “How’s your swing?”
His brows lifted. “In baseball?”
I pointed in the direction of the golf place. “Golf. There’s a simulator over there.”
“All right, let’s see what you got.”
We made our way down the street and went inside, grabbing a couple of drinks before reserving a bay.
I watched as Singleton selected a driver first and gave me a look. “Don’t be mad when I crush you.”
I leaned against the counter. “Big talker. Let’s see it.”
He took his swing, and the ball sailed straight down the virtual fairway, landing with a satisfying thud on the screen. He smiled over his shoulder. “Not bad, huh?”
“Lucky shot.” I stepped up, adjusting my grip on the club before taking my own swing. The ball hooked slightly, veering off-course. I frowned as Singleton snickered beside me.
“I thought you’d be better, given how well you bat,” he teased.
I shook my head, fighting a grin. “I’m better with bigger balls.”
He eyed me with a playful smirk but didn’t reply.
We played a few more rounds, and I improved enough to keep the score close. By the end, we were laughing, nudging each other, but keeping it casual enough that no one would think twice about us hanging out.
I was lining up my last shot when a woman approached, her longblonde hair falling in loose waves around her shoulders. She beamed, eyes flicking between us before settling on me. “You’re Crew Stratton, right?”
I nodded. “Yeah.”
“I thought so. My brother’s a huge Rockies fan.” She tucked a piece of hair behind her ear. “I was just wondering if I could buy you a drink?”
Before I could answer, Singleton spoke up. “Only if I get one too.”
She frowned slightly, as though she had no clue who he was. Probably didn’t. “I think you can handle that yourself.”
I glanced at him before responding to her, “Appreciate it, but we’re just hanging out.”
She took the rejection well, flashing another smile. “No worries. Good luck with the rest of the season.”
As she walked away, Singleton leaned against the high-top table, arms crossed. “So, you don’t date fans, or are you just not interested in her?”
I shrugged. “I hook up with women fans sometimes. Just hasn’t happened in a while.”
His gaze flickered with something unreadable. “How long’s a while?”
“Couple of months.”
He nodded slowly. “Hmm.”
“What?”
“Nothing.” He pushed off the table, that smirk creeping back. “Just wondering if you were gonna invite me back to your place, and that’s why you turned her down?”
I scanned the room and then lowered my voice slightly. “Maybe.”
“I’m ready if you are.”
