“Your eyes,” he said as I took another sip. “They’re blue.”

I contemplated that for a moment and nearly nodded. Because that made sense. My lycan side tended to be more prevalent in situations involving death or pain.

Jace listened as I puzzled over that fact a little more, thinking back to the other times my eyes had been blue. Such as when I’d felt threatened.

“Or aroused,” he added. “They’re blue during sex, too.”

“They are?” That might explain the animalistic urges I’d felt in the bedroom with him.

“Are you going to call those natural now?” he asked, eavesdropping on my thoughts. “Similar to how you only reacted to my vampiric sensuality because it was anaturalinclination?” He phrased it as a taunt, his question clearly rhetorical.

“You’ve provided sufficient scientific proof to the contrary,” I told him, conceding that I’d been very wrong in my original theory.

“I’d suggest providing even more, but we don’t have time to play right now.” He returned the water to the nightstand, which caused him to reach over me again. Only, this time, he stayed there and pressed his lips to mine.

I returned his kiss and searched his thoughts to learn more about our supposed time limit.

The answer appeared quickly.

Bunker 37.

He had the coordinates from Lajos’s former Vigils, and he’d confirmed them after reviewing some of Lajos’s files.

I listened as he detailed the office he’d explored while I recovered from my injury. He told me everything of use that he’d found inside Lajos’s private space, which wasn’t much but enough to confirm he’d known about Lilith’s projects. At least the ones in his territory.

Which had led Jace to wonder how Luka hadn’t known about the bunker on the Majestic Clan lands.

But he’d disregarded that curiosity as he read through several correspondence messages between Lajos and Lilith.

Jace’s tongue stroked mine, his kiss an intoxicating blend of desire and intellectual stimulation.

I moaned, disliking our timeline yet also looking forward to the prospect of answers.

Definitely not just your vampiric gifts,I thought at him.

He chuckled, his palm slipping up to cup my breast.I’ll hold you to that later.

I shivered at the promise in his words and at the realization that I was naked.

His mind whispered the reason why—mine.

He didn’t like that Lajos had not only seen me in that gown, but he’d touched me as well.

How the situation had ended had only stirred more guilt and anger.

So he’d stripped me, as well as himself, and held me for the last two hours while I finished healing.

His kiss deepened, his touch turning molten as I deciphered and translated this revelation. It was proprietary and thoughtful and so different from my other death experiences, where I’d woken up cold and alone.

Jace protected me.

Because hecared.

I marveled at the concept as our embrace turned into something more intimate than sexual. His touch shifted from my breast to my neck, his tongue whispering foreign benedictions into my mouth.

I stopped analyzing and just allowed it to happen.

Same as him.
