By playing with my swords,I answered simply.I don’t need to kill them, just incapacitate them long enough to detain them.Which would require a few more Archangels and Archdemons to show up to this fight.

An influx of power through battle would create the beacon required to draw them out.

Assuming they weren’t busy engaging in similar battles in the other realms.

I don’t like this, she said, her mental voice tired. But I don’t have a better idea. Her irises resembled liquid gold as she stared me down.Do not fucking die, Archangel. You’re still mine to kill.

I wouldn’t dream of cheating on you, little heiress. My death is forever yours.A fucked-up declaration of love.

But it was one that resulted in her lips twitching subtly because she understood the vow I’d just made to her.

A similar one whispered back to me from her mind, a promise to trust me to survive.

On the count of three, Archangel, she whispered.Three. Two…

“Get me out of here, Yaz,” she said on the “one” count, her shield disappearing.

I shot up into the sky, my wings leaving a flurry of furious wind in my wake.

And then I caught Zerak’s angelfire with my sword.

His expression gave nothing away, his gray skin shimmering with silver glitter beneath the sun. It would make him easy to track in the sky but difficult to focus on at the same time.

However, I didn’t need to be able to see the minute details within his features to fight him.

Except he wasn’t alone up here, something that registered nearly too late as I ducked another fiery assault.

A being blended into the sky, his wings and hair and skin a light blue.

I narrowed my gaze. “Raziel.”

The Archangel of Secrets did a little bow. “My brother sends his regards.”

Fuck. “How many of you are in favor of destroying the balance?” I demanded. “Do you realize what will happen to this plane when the veil falls?”

“It was always inevitable,” Zerak replied, his tone as stoic as ever. “We merely chose a side.”

“And unfortunately, it’s one you can’t join,” Raziel added. “It’s a bit contradictory to your role. Not to mention your newly established Divinity. So we don’t really have a choice but to destroy you.”

I wanted to ask them who had led the assault on me between the realms, but Zerak was clearly done speaking. He threw another ball of angelfire at me with Raziel’s final word, and then the two of them started chasing me through the sky.

Morax didn’t join us.

Kayla?

I’m fine, she snarled.Focus on those traitors and kill them. I’ve got this.

I nearly smiled, her ferocity provoking me into action.

She didn’t need my protection.

She was my mate. My partner. Myqueen.

Together we were the new Divinity.

And we would not fall.

“You chose the wrong side,” I told Zerak and Raziel as my swords caught both of their balls of angelfire at the same time.
