I’m fine!I returned, sprinting alongside the wall in an effort to put some distance between me and the damn shadows. Yaz and the others were right behind me.
But so were all the others.
Shit!I picked up speed, my mind working a mile a minute. How is she conjuring shit outside of the barrier? The only way that could be possible was if she had some back door built into that protective siding.
A back door I needed to find.
Last time, she’d tapped the shield to unravel it and allow the shadow being to escape.
This time, she hadn’t.
But her buddy had been able to make the ground collapse beneath us.
And someone had shot fire from the sky.
Unless…I frowned, considering the alternative.Unless there are actually five of them.
And the four inside were just a diversion for the real poweroutsideof the barrier.
Maybe they were just the guards, while the one who had created the rift was actually operating from the outside.
Guards that functioned as decoys.
Distractions from the real threat.
Prince Morax?I wondered. The Archangels in the sky?
Or was there another guilty party here, one we hadn’t yet suspected?
The earth quaked beneath my feet, sending me flying forward as a whirlwind of energy flooded the air.
Screams echoed behind me, the shadow creatures swooping down and attacking everything in sight.
This isn’t right, I thought, staring at the scene unfolding before me.Why would someone unleash the Shadow realm beings on top of the portal? The same portal that was opened to release demons supposedly fighting on the side of those trying to take down the veil?
It was as though we had three attacking parties—those who wanted to uphold the veil, those who wanted to take it down, and someone who just desired a bout of insanity.
My head spun as I tried to piece it all together, the ground rumbling again from another explosion nearby.
The trees were all on fire.
The sky flooded with smoke and shadow beings.
There were demons covered in blood.
Nephilim using their cuffs to portal-jump all around.
Prince Morax taking to the sky as he fought off a shadow creature.
And my guard trying to form a defensive line around me as the earth continued to shake.
Ezra, nothing about this is making any sense,I told him.
Silence.
Ezra?
A blinding light erupted from the sky, sending me to my knees as the power behind the eruption rippled down to us on the ground.
