Powers were continuing to fluctuate.

The balance is severely at risk.

All things I already knew.

But to see them…again… made everything else in this world feel trivial at best.

“Fuck,” I whispered to myself. This all proved that Ashmedai’s theory about an impending war was absolutely a viable notion.

Whoever took Kristina likely wanted to siphon the power for themselves to use in the upcoming battle. Or perhaps make her an outlet for their abundance of power, which was what my father and Prince Alastor needed pieces of the Divinity to do for them. They were growing too strong and needed the magical conduit to ground them.

Maybe Kristina would be used for a similar purpose.

But the method of her capture suggested otherwise.

This is really bad. A complete understatement, of course. And I’d made it all worse by aiding in Kristina’s capture.

“We need to find her right now,” I said to myself, standing to scan the maps on Ezra’s desk once more. They weren’t as easy to read for some reason.

My brow furrowed.

Why are they so dark? The moon had illuminated them perfectly what felt like minutes ago.

I glanced at the windows to find the moon had shifted away to another part of the room, and there wasn’t any overhead lighting otherwise. How long was I…?

My attention shifted to the floor, noting the myriad of maps littering the ground.

Ezra stood just off to the side, leaning against his desk with his legs casually crossed at the ankles and his hands in the pockets of his jeans. His wings were nowhere in sight.

What…?

Amusement taunted his full lips as he asked, “Are you quite finished?”

I cleared my throat, my mouth having gone dry at finding his intense gaze on me. “I, uh, yes.”

Very eloquent, Kay. Great job.

Shaking my head, I pushed away from his desk and took in the mess I’d made of his office. There were drawings and maps everywhere.

“Um…” I glanced at his desk again to find a floating red dot sparking magic in the air. I’d missed it in my daze of trying to read the maps in the dark. “Uh, is that telling us where Kristina is?”

“Yes.”

I nodded. “Then we’re leaving…?” I prompted.

“Sure,” he drawled. “Just as soon as you tell me what the fuck all of this means.”

Ezra

I wasn’t blind.I could plainly see what Kayla had just designed—a war map displaying all the power shifts throughout each realm.

What I really wanted to know washowshe’d created it.

Because it was… beautiful. Concise. And most importantly, accurate.

Every spike of power I’d sensed within the world had been captured in her drawings, as though she’d pulled the information from my soul. As the Archangel of Justice, I could sense imbalances throughout the realms.

Was this a result of our bond? Had she acquired the ability because of my link to her blood? Or was this another talent entirely?
