We were a mated pair, rekindling a bond from ages ago that had weakened with time. It still remained, the vow one made for eternity. But it’d dulled. And our little kiss had just reignited the blistering heat between us. Only to be cooled by Ezra’s energy once more.
“Are you feeding from my essence?” I asked, my voice a pant as my thighs clenched with unmistakable need.
“No. Our bond is finding a new equilibrium,” he replied, his golden irises flaring with power. “You’re overflowing with warmth, and I’m providing the outlet you need to stabilize.”
“By absorbing my energy,” I translated.
He shook his head. “It’s not about energy, Kayla. It’s about reestablishing our link. You being in Hell and unattainable for decades has left me without a much-needed counterbalance for everything that gives meaning to life. I don’t need your energy, little heiress. I needus.”
I swallowed. “I’m not sure I want to give that to you.” A lie. My body absolutely wanted to give him everything. He’d lit a fire within me that only he could appease. But if it meant strengthening our bond to the point where I might be unable to let him go, then I wasn’t sure I could do that.
I’d come here to kill him.
I still wanted him dead.
I still wanted him to pay.
But I also… I also just wanted him.
“I know,” he said softly, his forehead falling to mine as his hand slid up into my hair to comb through the strands. His mouth brushed mine, both our lips swollen from our bites and harsh kiss. However, he made this embrace feel so tender, like it was warmed by a thousand promises that neither of us voiced yet felt all the way to our souls.
I shivered.
This bond between us was dangerous.
Meanwhile, it could also be one of the best sensations of my life.
I licked his bottom lip, craving more of his blood. Alas, the wound had already closed.
Part of me wanted to do it all over again, but Ezra pulled away before I could, his gaze knowing. Probably because he felt a similar urge. “The Nephilim won’t be a problem,” he said, the hand on my ass returning to my hip. “Let me handle them. You just observe and see if you can read any of their auras.”
I wouldn’t be able to, but I nodded anyway.
Mostly because I didn’t trust myself to speak.
“We’ll leave in the morning,” he added, helping me to stand once more. “I’ll make sure Zebulon’s contact is ready.”
With that, he released me. Then he took several steps away from me, his wings ruffling at his back.
And in the next breath, he disappeared through the windows.
Into the late afternoon sky.
Ezra
Kissing Kayla…had been a mistake.
Because now I just wanted more.
Her curves beneath my palms. Her naked flesh sweating against my own. Her lips caressing my throbbing shaft. Her nails against my back. Her slick heat pulsating around me as I drove inside her.
I wanted to taste her arousal, to find out if it was as sweet as it smelled.
I wanted to fucking drown in her.
It was all I could think about, making sleep last night an impossibility and leaving me even more unfulfilled this morning.
Thank fuck I had a distraction waiting for us, or I’d pick up right where we’d left off against that bookcase, remove all the clothes, take her into the sky, and teach her how angels preferred to mate.
