Swallowing, I felt around beneath me, noting the plush mattress and silky sheets. Melek had promised me new accommodations. And it seemed he’d delivered.

Except…

I squinted my eyes in the dimness, a flickering flame on the wall my only source of light.

I’m not alone.My eyes widened.Is that…?My lips parted.Ajax.

His eyes were closed, hiding those pretty blue-black irises from view. But a hell of a lot more of him was on display.

Because he was shirtless.

And wearing gray sweatpants.

All of which I could see reflected in the low lighting because he was sleeping on top of the covers, not beneath them.

Am I dreaming?

I ran my gaze over Ajax’s flawless chest to his abdomen and the little trail of hair leading downward from his navel.Certainly looks like a dream, I thought, my teeth skimming my lower lip.

Which made me flinch from the soreness of my mouth.

Yeah, definitely not a dream.

Because if it were, my lips would be full and moist and ready to explore all those firm ridges with my tongue. But I was parched, my throat begging for more water.

I considered moving.

Maybe evenrunning.

However, leaving the bed might wake Ajax up.

And then what?

Curling my fingers into the sheets, I tried to figure out how I’d ended up here. Melek had promised to improve my sleeping conditions, and while, yes, this was certainly an upgrade from my cell, he hadn’t said anything about Ajax being in the new accommodations with me.

But I hadn’t exactly stipulated that I bealonein a bed. I’d just agreed to something soft and warm, with a hint of cool air.

Which he’d more than delivered on.

Just with the added bonus of a shirtless Ajax.

Something I probably wouldn’t have minded in a previous life. He was a stunning specimen of a male who I had no doubt could tempt me into sin between these sheets on a normal day.

But here? In this place?

No.

Not after yesterday’s trial and everything these men had forced me to endure.

Of course, Ajax had actually tried to help me. And his assistance hadn’t gotten me into any trouble. He’d been a bit of a dick, though.

At first, anyway.

Yesterday he’d been almost…human. His stoic front had returned when he’d left me on that field to embrace my fate, but between providing me with food and a Nightmare Fae lesson, he’d actually been rather nice.

Which probably made me moronic for somewhat forgiving his kidnapping.

But I also understood that the fae world didn’t play by mortal rules. He was just doing his job.
