Ajax sighed. “Az. She’s a candidate. She’s not here for this.”

My brow furrowed. “Then why is she here?”

No one had clarified that finer detail for me.

Not that I truly cared.

Her arousal spoke volumes. I’d scented it the moment I’d faced her, that alluring perfume drawing me to her like a Phoenix to a flame.

“The candidates are supposed to be with their benefactors for the rest period,” I added, my thumb tracing her plump lower lip. “Does that mean you’re hers?” Because that would imply that playing was allowed and I very much wanted to play.

“Melek requested an upgrade to her accommodations and some training,” Ajax explained through his teeth. “Stop using your Phoenix energy on her, Az.”

My lips curled. “No.” My Phoenix rather liked this little warrior, her power an allure I refused to ignore. “What are you?” I marveled again, searching her eyes. “What is your father a mix of?”How did he evade me?My grip threatened to tighten again, my irritation returning at the reminder of my failed mission.

Even now, I couldn’t sense him. And I had a lock on his essence, my Phoenix still hunting despite Typhos telling me to return.

The moment his aura surfaced, I would go after him.

Yet Camillia’s aura differed from his.

She tasted sweeter. Almost innocent in nature. Yet that mouth of hers was positively sinful. I wanted to kiss her. Devour her.Fuckher.

Yes, my Phoenix seemed to whisper.Take her.

“Az.” Ajax’s deep voice interrupted my focus, his whip of power wrapping around my neck like a noose. “Release her. I’m not going to ask you again.”

My Phoenix hissed in response, my energy whipping out in protest, going straight to his soul.

He growled, my name a curse on his lips as he squeezed his magical hold around my throat. “Now.”

I released Camillia’s chin and faced the angry Midnight Fae. “You do not tell me what to do.”

“I do today.”

I arched a brow. “You think you’ve earned that right?”

“She’s not yours.”

“She’s not yours either,” I pointed out.She belongs to Melek now. Of course, he was just using her for some sort of game. Or perhaps he intended to keep her. Regardless, I wanted her. So he would just have to share.

As would Ajax.

I pushed off the couch to step into Ajax’s personal space and blasted him with more energy. His invisible grip around my neck tightened, cutting off my airflow. Then it fizzled around me in a burning wave of ash-like mist as he dissolved the spell into something else.

Something hot.

Somethingenticing.

My Phoenix perked up at the embers, approving of the heat and fiery kiss against my bare chest.

Ajax’s nostrils flared, the blue rims of his gaze smoldering.

Angry arousal hummed in the air between us, his pulse an alluring sound to my sensitive ears.Thiswas what I’d come here for—him. My outlet. My Ajax. The Midnight Fae who could take my aggression and give it back in kind.

Yes, yes.

He owed me from the other night.
