“What kind of fae are you?” she demanded after a beat of silence. “Because you’re not a Hell Fae.”

“I’m not?” I asked innocently.

“No. You’re too… too…ethereal.”

Hmm, an apt definition.“Well, once upon a time, we were all ethereal. So I suppose that makes sense, doesn’t it?”

“That doesn’t answer my question.”

“No, I suppose not,” I admitted, pushing up off the couch. “Alas, our time is quickly coming to an end, and I still have another… non-gift… to give you.”

“More spells?”

“Not quite,” I murmured. “Stand, please. I would prefer not to kneel.” I only did that for Ty.

She swallowed, appearing uncertain.

“I’m not going to hurt you,” I promised.

“Like your cupcake didn’t hurt me?” she countered.

“Did it hurt you, or did it ensure you restored all your energy reserves in a peaceful manner?”

Her eyes narrowed. “I prefer to sleep willingly, not by force.”

“Duly noted,” I drawled. “Stand, please. I won’t ask again.” And if she refused, then I would be forced to leave without offering her the kiss of my protection.

Ty would not be happy with my decision to do this, but it was the only way to guarantee she survived the opening games. It also served as a way for me to test a theory.

Once our souls brushed, I’d know for certain if she was what I suspected her to be. And if I proved myself right—which I strongly expected to happen—it would be best to keep her as close as possible. What better way to do that than to engage in a first-level bond?

She wins by accepting my protection.

I win by having access to her spirit, and through it, her intentions.

Ty would call it a reckless decision and punish me for it.

But I considered it pragmatic.

And I’d enjoy his brand of retribution, too.

Wins all around, in my opinion.

“Cami?” I prompted, arching a brow. I’d said I wouldn’t repeat myself, and I’d meant it.

She chewed her lip, a gesture that I found adorable, before she finally decided to comply with my request by gracefully rising to her feet.

“Very good,” I said, taking a moment to admire her form in this scrap of a dress.

Stunningwas an understatement.

Clearing my throat, I refocused on her beautiful face. “I would like to give you a vow of protection. Will you allow it?”

Her eyes narrowed. “Why?”

“I think the purpose of the gift is implied by its name.”

“No.Whywould you protect me?”
