“But I made my requirements very clear,” he continued. “I wanted Dr. Campbell alive anduntouched.” He glanced down at me, his sharp cheekbones accentuated by the clenching of his square jaw. “She lookstouchedto me.”

I almost snorted in reply, but a shaky exhale from Jonas seized my attention in the next second.

Shit.

I immediately shifted back into human form and ran to him. He was no longer conscious, his bones seeming to have fractured around his middle. From the vampire squeezing him, I realized.

And he was covered in gashes, the combination of injuries from claws and teeth.

“Kieran.” I couldn’t help the sense of urgency in my voice. “He’s dying.”

“Indeed,” Kieran agreed.

The vampire shrieked, but I didn’t bother looking at him.

It seemed Kieran had decided to apply the statement to the other supernatural.

I wasn’t going to protest.

Nor was I going to give him the respect of even watching him die.

My focus remained on Jonas. My mate. My love.I whispered his name, my hands seeming to move uselessly over him.

I didn’t know what to fix first. I wasn’t even sure that I could help him. He was… he was bleeding. And not healing.

Barely even breathing now.

Fuck. “Kieran!” I screamed this time, my palms continuing to helplessly flutter over Jonas. I was a doctor. I… I had medical knowledge. I had tofixthis. But how? Where? Without tools, without… without…Oh, moons…

I looked around, searching for something that could help.Herbs,I thought.Plant medicine. Maybe. Something. There has to be something!

The V-Clan Alpha knelt beside me, his midnight gaze on Jonas before looking at me. He seemed to scan my face and body for injury, his expression purely clinical. “Are you all right?”

“No!” I shouted. “No, I’m not all right. Jonas isdying.”

“Yes,” he agreed calmly. “He is.”

“I…” I wasn’t sure what to say. “I have to save him. We need… I don’t know. I don’t know!” The hysteria in my chest spread through my veins, making me shake.

Calm down,I told myself.Calm down and focus. This is what you do. You save lives. Save Jonas. Save Jonas!

But my wolf was panicking inside me, causing my heart to thunder in my chest. Her terror suffocated my ability to think, my soul already weeping for the male I’d only just begun to… tolove.

“I see your secret has been revealed,” Kieran said, his gaze lowered to Jonas. “He wasted no time in claiming you.”

“I… I went into heat.” An obvious statement, one Kieran had clearly already assumed if he’d put a bounty on hisOmegafriend—something we would absolutely be discussing later.

“And he claimed you,” Kieran summarized.

“I. Yes. But I don’t think… I don’t think he had a choice.” Not just because of my heat, but because we wanted each other. He was mine. I was his. Our wolves had spoken for us. The man… the man had just done what his beast had required of him.

“We always have a choice, little one,” Kieran replied, his palms lifting to hover over Jonas’s dying form.

He’d begun to shift back into his human state, his body revealing all the horrible injuries he’d sustained.

Oh, Jonas.I shivered.

“Can… can you heal him?” I knew Kieran possessed healing abilities. That was why he’d become a doctor, or rather, why he’d agreed to help with the virus research. But I wasn’t sure how deep those talents ran, if he could help Jonas now or not.
