But I had to follow my instincts.
I looked at Ajax. “Let’s go.”
CHAPTER34
CAMI
Apparently, the half-fallen wall was what had separated the Bridal Garden from the exterior region. The moment we crossed over the center of it, I heard Melek’s familiar voice.
“This isn’t going to fix things, Ty.” He sounded concerned. “Let’s take a step back and evaluate the best—”
“There’s notime,” Lucifer interjected.
It was a different tone from that of the smug king who had been in the club.
This was the ruler, the one who was dealing with an active threat in his realm, an attack on his people.
This was the Lucifer who cared.
I’d better memorize it because I doubt I’m going to see this side of him again—assuming I survive the night.
Ignoring that thought, I continued climbing over debris, making my way toward Lucifer’s and Melek’s voices. Every step I took in their direction felt right, like I was being reeled in by some magical power.
What is this?I wondered. Why do I feel like I’m on an invisible leash?
Maybe it’s these clothes,I thought, glancing down at the enchanted metal. Is it trying to find Lucifer?
I stumbled over one of the rocks, only to be caught by Ajax’s arm, his hand immediately going to my hip to help me over the particularly difficult terrain.
“If that vortex starts trying to suck us in, you have to let me shadow you,” he said softly. “Please.”
“Sure,” I agreed, not bothering to argue with that. It was logical and made sense. “But I suspect my magic will just yank me right back here again.”
He frowned at that. “You mean you’re not doing it intentionally?”
I shook my head. “No. I didn’t fight Az, but my magic did.”
He hummed in consideration, then paused as the portal came into view.
It was massive, sitting in a sea of destruction amidst the center of a marshy pit.
Damn.
It was so much worse than what I’d seen on the screen. So much larger, too.
“Was it that big before?” I asked slowly, taking in the engorged size of it.
“No, it’s grown,” Ajax replied, sounding grim.
A rush of murky waters swirled around the opening, the magic seemingly created by the creatures of this world. Or perhaps it was the very essence of this kingdom being drawn into the massive black hole.
The whirlpool seemed to be sucking in everything around it—trees, pieces of the Unseelie palace, Unseelie themselves, a few Nagas…
And brides.
Lucifer floated into the sky as his magic sent heat blazing all around him.
While the chaos had stolen my attention, nothing compared to the fury of the Hell Fae King.
