He’d shared his secrets, his hurts, hispast.

And then he’d fucked me more thoroughly than anyone ever had before. He’d practicallyownedme.

So no. We would not be going backward, especially when I might not be alive much longer.

“Tell me what’s bothering you,” I told him. “Speak so we can work through it.”

His dark eyes gleamed in the firelight provided by the walls, the blue edge around his irises taking on a purplish shade that reminded me a bit of Az. “I’m not a Hellhound, Camillia. I don’t adhere to commands.”

I folded my arms. “Well, I don’t accept brooding assholes darkening my personal space without good reason. So. Start talking.”

He snorted and took another drink before setting the bottle on the obsidian countertop. “This isn’t your personal space; it’s Az’s.” He glanced around, his eyebrows drawing together. “Or it was until Melek’s little embellishments.”

When he narrowed his gaze at the stripper poles, I assumed he was also including those in his list ofembellishments. That didn’t surprise me. Those metal beams had Melek’s name imprinted all over them.

“And I’m not being an asshole. I’m just thinking,” he added. “But I can be an asshole, if that’s what you fancy.”

He pulled his wand from his pocket and waved it through the air, causing a pair of handcuffs to appear with one edge secured to my wrist. A gust of wind followed, sending me right toward one of those beams.

And the opposite cuff snapped around the pole.

I narrowed my gaze. “Undo it. Now.”

“No.” He picked up his bottle to take another drink, then set it on the counter. “I’ll release you after I take a shower. Until then, stay.”

“Ajax.” I could handle handcuffs in a kinky situation, but this wasn’t that. “You are not handcuffing me to a fucking stripper pole.”

“I already have,” he replied, waltzing past me to pick up his bag. “Now try to behave and I’ll reward you with the key.”

My eyebrows flew upward. “You’ve got to be fucking kidding me. Az warned me you would try to push me away, but I had no idea you’d be so damn skilled at it.”

He paused on the threshold to the bedroom—or what I assumed was the bedroom since Melek had said it was down that hallway—and glanced back at me. “I’m not trying to do anything other than keep you here, which is my new assignment. And the last time I went into the bathroom, you fucking disappeared. That won’t be happening again.”

New assignment?“What do you mean? You’ve always been my Warden. How is that a new assignment?”

“I’ve always beentheWarden.” He faced me fully. “But now I amyourWarden only. My position has been temporarily filled while Lucifer decides what to do with you and what to do with me. So do me a favor and fucking behave. Because I have no interest in dying for you.”

With that, he left me gaping in his wake.

Shit.

So we would be sharing this room? I supposed that explained his duffel bag. It also explained his dark mood.

“My position has been temporarily filled…”

Meaning Lucifer had removed him from his post.

Because of me.

Except I hadn’t done anything wrong. I hadn’t meant to escape. I hadn’t meant to touch the source, either.

So what does this mean for both of us? What will Lucifer decide to do?

I sat on the floor, my eyes glued to the hallway Ajax had just disappeared down. All the frustration I’d felt for him melted away as I realized he was probably just as much in the dark as I was.

Because Lucifer blamed him for what had happened with me.

I’d been in Ajax’s bed when I’d not only magically fled Hell but also ended up near this realm’s heart of power.
