My eyes widened. “Oh. Uh, hi?”
Neither of them replied, their focus on the ground.
My brow furrowed. Can they not see me?
And what does this have to do with my dad?
I glanced down at Vita, but the page still hadn’t changed.
“I do.” Melek’s wary tones wavered on the wind, giving his voice an eerie quality. “It’s the same as what I sensed in the Underwater Kingdom—Virtuous magic.”
Az nodded, his fingers running through his thick, dark hair. “But why would they appear after all this time?”
“Time is subjective,” Melek replied, the shaky breeze flowing through the portal distorting his voice once more. “Especially for ones as old as us. But they’re clearly behind the portal. The question is, what were they really trying to achieve? Because releasing Nightmare Fae into the Human Realm wasn’t their end goal.”
“No, that’s just a distraction.” Az’s violet eyes narrowed. “We need to talk to King Onyx, maybe even Hades. See what other clues they might have missed while distracted by Monsters Night.”
Melek hummed.“Agreed.”
I leaned forward, curious to learn more, but the portal abruptly went dark, the smoke sputtering as though out of fuel. I grabbed my necklace, ready to utter the spell again, when Ajax shadowed into the room wearing nothing but a towel.
Oh.
Oh, shit,I thought, realizing what this looked like.
The last time he’d gone to take a shower, I’d disappeared for thirty days. And he’d probably just sensed the portal in the living room, therefore jumping to conclusions.
“Ajax,” I started. “It’s not—”
“What thefuck, Camillia?” he roared, tackling me to the ground before I could finish speaking.
I glanced around, dazed, searching for the book, to explain what I’d been doing.
But it was nowhere to be seen.
Of fucking course.
CHAPTER20
AJAX
“I can’tbelieveyou,”I snarled.
Fuck, I couldn’t believe that I’d trusted her, that I’d bought her lies, that I’d thought she was innocent.
But now I knew the truth.
A portal.Thatwas how she escaped.
And she’d almost managed to do it again. But I’d caught a hint of the magic in the air and stopped her before she could flee.
Her tight leather pants clung to my skin as I braced one arm at her throat, pinning her to the ground. I’d lost my towel in the process, but fuck that.
Andfuck her.
I’d basically bled myself at her feet, thanks to that fucking truth serum, and this was her response?
To try to run?Again?
