“But I won’t be averting them anymore,” he continues, ignoring her sarcastic reply. “Not now that I know you’re mine.”

Fallon freezes on her way to the bathroom, and I would give almost anything to see her expression, but she’s facing the other way.

After a beat, she resumes walking, clearly out of one-liner comebacks for my brazen best friend.

When the door closes, I look at him. “How many times have you watched her bathe?”

“Not even once,” he admits. “But I’ve found her passed out in there a few times, and one of those times was after a bath. So I noticed the salts.”

That sounds more like Nox. He may joke about spying on her, but it’s all in good fun because he enjoys teasing. My best friend has always valued consent, and I doubt he would be any different around Fallon.

“So how are we going to convince Kaspian to let us take her to the lagoon?” I ask as I push off of the floor.

“I’m not sure.” Nox palms the back of his neck. “I suspect I’ll need to do some sensual begging.”

“That may not work in his current mood.”

“Which is why I suggested a movie for tonight. It’ll give me some time to figure out how to approach Kaspian.”

I nod. “It’ll give us some quiet time with Fallon, too. Maybe help her see what life could be like if she accepts us.”

“Yes. Although, I think the last year has provided a pretty good introduction to what that would be like. Except for the whole confinement part.”

“True,” I agree. “But we’ll make it work.”

“We will.” He smiles. “Because she’s ours.”

My mouth curves upward to match his expression. “Yes. Yes, she is.”

Which means I no longer have to ignore the way she makes me feel.

Because it’s no longer forbidden or inappropriate to be attracted to her.

Fate deemed us compatible. Now we just have to convince Fallon to accept fate’s path.

Let us worship you, sweet flame. I promise you won’t regret it.

FALLON

Issy?I haven’t heard from my twin since Klas’s execution, and it’s making me uneasy. Are you okay?

I study my surroundings as I wait for her reply.

Bane and Nox slept on the couch after watching a trilogy with me last night. They both seemed reluctant to leave me alone, reminding me of the times they found me after one of my nightmares.

After waking up this morning, Bane made breakfast and coffee.

Nox cleaned up.

Then they said it was time to talk to Kaspian.

Now I’m staring at the living room, feeling a lot lonelier than I should.

Because I can’t hear Issy,I tell myself. That’s why I feel this way. It has nothing to do with my supposed mates or them leaving me in my gilded cage.

I drag my fingers through my tangled hair, aware that I haven’t brushed it yet today. Not that my sleepy appearance seemed to impact Bane or Nox at all. If anything, they both looked at me with open adoration this morning.
