A smile flirted on my lips. He wasn’t wrong. When the little darling wasn’t hiding stonepeckers in beds—thankfully, not ours, as she seemed to like Ajax—she was setting something on fire or testing out a new spell that wreaked havoc.

A spell that Shade had taught her, no doubt.

“Maybe,” I agreed, stifling a yawn behind my free hand. “And one of those mushroom bread things.”

He shot up an eyebrow. “A shroom loaf?”

I shrugged. “What can I say? Aflora’s tastes are rubbing off on me.” The Elemental Fae cuisine was foreign to me, but I liked it.

A genuine smile crossed his features, dazzling me. Lucifer’s warm heat finally bled from my skin, and a small shiver ran up my spine. I welcomed the chill as I adjusted to the room’s actual temperature.

Ajax would no doubt warm me up again when he returned with midnight breakfast.

“Careful, little rebel. If you keep looking at me like that, I’ll feed you something else.”

“Is that an offer or a threat?”

Instead of answering, he leaned in, claiming my mouth with his.

I hummed against him as he enveloped me in a powerful kiss, and then he was gone, his shadows inking around me like a caress. One that said,Be back soon, little rebel.

“I must say, this lovesick-puppy look on you is rather charming,” a familiar voice preened. “I’m glad to see things are going well with the Warden.”

CHAPTER26

CAMI

Snapping to attention,I jerked the sheets over myself again as I stared up at Melek.

Who had appeared in my room, once again.

Uninvited—but that never stopped him.

I chose to ignore hislovesick puppycomment, as well as the urge to correct him that Ajax wasn’t the Warden anymore.

Somehow, Melek seemed to hide his existence here from my other mates.

Az was still asleep on the couch.

Ajax was off retrieving food.

And neither had felt my instant shock at Melek’s arrival.

I had no idea how Melek had done it, but he’d clearly found a way to mask my reactions to his random visits.

Maybe that’s what his sparkle jizz does?I marveled.Who the hell knows?

My gaze fell to the stack of documents tucked against his side as I realized the reason for his visit, and I groaned. “Oh, goody. More deals, I presume?” I gave him a raised brow. “You know, Argumentation and Debate class wasn’t my favorite subject, and it’s no better with a hellish spin.”

The cases I had reviewed in class might have been dull, but at least it was for a justice system with a goal of putting the bad guys behind bars.

These deals from Melek were all about foolish fae selling their souls to the literal devil. Every time I saw one of Melek’s examples, it turned my stomach.

Because it only reminded me of what my parents had done.

My political science undergraduate program and pre-law status at the University of Florida had prepared me for a lot, but so far, it wasn’t enough. Clearly, I still had a lot to learn.

I just wasn’t so sure if Melek as my teacher was the answer to my problems.
