Zakkai had allowed my presence here, in part, because Cami was my intended. Az belonged to Ty, and it would be his right to come for him—and perhaps those he was mated to, as well, under the right circumstances.

Whatever those circumstances might be, Ty would find the crack he needed to shove open the door.

Ajax’s fists clenched as shadows curled around his feet. One of his hands held his wand, and it glowed with amethyst power that took on a new golden hue.

He leveled a stare at me, one filled with barely restrained violence. “Promise that I’ll return.Tonight.”

“I promise that you’ll return tonight,” I echoed. Interrealm Fae law was clear in this matter. Ajax was categorized as a Midnight Fae and a royal guest. Therefore, Ajax was not to be kept hostage. That didn’t work in Ty’s interests.

Not today, anyway.

Ajax didn’t voice his acceptance.

But I saw the resigned agreement in his expression.

I held out my hand, my magic glittering as I began the trip to the Hell Fae Kingdom. “He’s in the throne room,” I advised him. “Want a lift?”

Ajax ignored my outstretched offering as shadows engulfed him like a void, devouring him whole. He was more than capable of traveling between realms with a simple thought.

I curled my fingers as I smirked and followed him home.

CHAPTER28

CAMI

A trayof food had appeared on my bed while I’d been showering and dressing, the shroom loaf suggesting it’d come from Ajax.

Except he was nowhere to be found.

Where are you?I asked him, the room seemingly empty apart from Az on the couch.

I’m dealing with Melek,he muttered.I’ll be back when we’re done.

My lips turned down at the sides.Dealing with Melek how? What does he want?

What does Melek ever want? To meddle, of course.

I chewed my bottom lip. A meddling Melek was never a good thing.

I’ll be back in a bit,Ajax added after a beat.

He’s taking you somewhere?

Yeah,he replied.Just a quick trip.

Where?

It’s Melek. It could be anywhere,he replied. But I’ll be fine, Cami. Promise.

That seemed like a promise he shouldn’t make. However, I couldn’t exactly tell him what to do here. He might be my mate, but I didn’t own him.

If the roles were reversed, I’d never let him stop me from doing something I wanted to do. The Marsh Lands was a pretty good example of that. And he’d let me do what I’d needed to do without interference.

I supposed I should repay that favor now, even if it felt…wrong. It hadn’t exactly felt right to Ajax then, either. But he’d trusted me.

So I’d trust him now.

Be careful,I whispered to him.
