Zakkai considered us for a moment and shrugged before turning away to kneel beside Florica. “Let’s take Dragonya back to Daddy Shade’s den and create more fireballs.”

The smirk dancing over Shade’s lips immediately melted away. “No.”

But Florica was already cheering in excitement, which had the dragon leaping up in immediate alarm. Zakkai picked up the bone and chucked it toward the palace before flashing Shade a quick smile.

Shade cursed and immediately shadowed after the now-flying dragon, Florica squealing with joy on his back the whole time.

Zeph and Kols shared a look while Aflora sighed. “You’re all giving me a headache now. Why are men so obnoxious?”

“Hey, I didn’t do anything,” Kols argued.

“Uh-huh,” Aflora murmured.

“I also haven’t done anything,” Zeph added, his deep voice one of his defining traits. That and his green eyes—the same color as his magic. “But I’m about to do something.”

Aflora glanced at him, her eyebrows lifting. “Zeph?—”

She yelped as he lifted her off the ground and into his arms. “You look famished, pixie flower. Kols, go grab the blood paste.”

Kols grinned. “Yeah, all right. Meet you back at the room?”

Zeph nodded.

Aflora turned pink.

And I faced Az again while shaking my head.At least they’re all distracted now,I thought at him, some of my ire seeming to have disappeared in the last few minutes of whatever the fuck that was.

Remind me not to procreate,Az replied, then winced as his bird growled in response. It seemed the man was at odds with his animal’s instincts.

Despite everything, my lips twitched.Procreating is probably the best thing that’s ever happened to Shade, apart from his mating to Aflora. He might still be an obnoxious dick, but he’d grown a lot over the last decade. He was such a rebel back in the day.

I think he’s still pretty rebellious.

Yeah, I guess he is,I agreed, shaking my head again.A dragon for a familiar is quite something.

Hmm. Az didn’t sound as impressed. What’s your familiar?

My jaw ticked.None of your damn business.

Touchy subject?he taunted.

Do you want me to kill you?I demanded, my fingers curling into fists at my sides.Because I will. Ican. Especially while you’re under this spell.

I’ll just ash back to life,he returned. So, sure. If that’s what will make you feel better, then kill me.

My jaw clenched. It won’t make me feel better.

Then why waste the energy?he asked.Besides, you need me to help you protect Cami. Killing me will make that temporarily harder.

I glared down at him. “How the fuck are you going to help me protect Cami? You’re mated to the fucking threat.”

Typhos isn’t going to hurt her.

“Right. I believe that,” I deadpanned. “Your Phoenix just mated her. He’ll probably see her as an even bigger threat now because of it.”

Or maybe he’ll see that she could be a valuable ally,Az pointed out.Maybe you should give me a chance to talk to him and see what I can work out.

My eyebrows lifted. “Like I would trust you with that. The last time youworked something outwith him, Cami ended up in chains on a stage, and I was forced to sit there and watch while bound by your powers.”
