His forehead hit my shoulder, my lips still near his pulse. “Do it.”

“You haven’t fed recently,” I replied, my breath ragged from my hand and our discussion.

“I’m fine. Fucking do it.”

My incisors ached at the prospect, Kols’s bloodline an aphrodisiac to my senses. As his pledged Guardian for life, I could drink from him without worrying about the mating link snapping into place, because we were already bonded in a different way. I pledged my fealty to him nearly a decade ago, sealing our fates.

Thatwas what marked this assignment as temporary.

No one could protect Kols like I could.

We were literally linked in an ancient ceremony very few knew about outside of his esteemed lineage.

“Now, Zeph,” he demanded, his voice hoarse with the strain of his impending climax.

I sent him over the edge by biting down hard on his neck and piercing his vein. His power flowed into my mouth on a wave of molten energy that revitalized my connection to the dark arts in an instant and shot me into oblivion with him.

Our groans reverberated around the marble walls of my shower, his seed mingling with mine against our abdomens and coating us in the forbidden lust that constantly brewed between us.

That was why we enjoyed this—the wrongness of it.

We were both equally fucked up and embraced the insanity.

Nothing could ever exist here beyond mutual satisfaction, his destiny and mine already tied up in a fucking bow of Council-sanctioned perfection.

A perfection Aflora endangered, which only enticed me more.

She had the potential to change everything.

And destroy us all.

In likelythe best way possible.

I released Kols’s neck, my eyes finding his as our minds melded together in a temporary infusion. This always happened when I bit him, our mental states fluctuating.

Those thoughts about Aflora hadn’t been mine, but his. Only, I echoed the sentiment now that I’d heard it. “You want her to fuck it all up,” I whispered, having seen the darkest secret lurking inside his mind. “You welcome her chaos.”

“It’s a dark fantasy.” He licked his lips, his voice hoarse from our joined pleasure. “It’ll never happen.”

“But you want it to.”

“As do you.”

I didn’t deny it.

Because he was right. The depraved part of me that connected so deeply to Kols longed to see his wicked thoughts come true. Which was precisely why I released him. “Get out.” This never should have happened anyway. I owed it to him—toeveryone—to remain distant and avoid a repeat of the Dakota experience.

And Aflora posed the biggest risk in the history of my existence to Kols’s safety.

We shouldn’t even be discussing her, let alone fantasizing about her.

Kols narrowed his gaze, ignoring my command to leave. “Look, I get it. You’re losing sight of your control around her. But being a dick isn’t going to solve this problem.”

I ground my teeth together, my urge to punch him rising with every breath. “This has nothing to do with my control.”And everything to do with protecting you,I added to myself.

“It has everything to do with your control. You want her, and it’s becoming harder and harder not to fuck her. The fact that she could derail a future we both despise only makes her that much more intriguing. But we can’t. We both know we can’t.”

“I’m not the one considering that fantasy,” I pointed out.
