“What do you plan on doing?” Damien asked, his hard expression matching his tone.

“Whatever is necessary to guarantee Ismerelda’s safety.” I turned to leave, only to find my upper arm caught in his strong hand.

“The last time you went off on your own, my sister ended up paying a price for your arrogance.” He shoved me back into the cabin and stalked around me. “You’re wearing a comm.”

“A what?”

“An earpiece,” he grated out, pointing to the device in his ear. “It’ll let us communicate while you’re off doing whatever the fuck it is you plan to do.”

I folded my arms but didn’t argue as he found what he needed in a bag he’d brought with us for the trip.

Cane was very likely going to make me remove it. Or maybe he wouldn’t care.

If he truly wanted me to partner with him in this venture, then he needed to let me make my own decisions.

Of course, he’d been clearly trying to make all my choices for me, so that likely wasn’t going to change.

Which leads me right back to his true intentions,I muttered to myself as I accepted the earpiece from Damien. I put it in, clicked a button—per his demand—and arched a brow. “May I go save your sister now?”

He rolled his eyes and thumbed the button of my shirt.

Frowning, I glanced down, trying to figure out what the fuck that gesture meant.

“It’s your microphone,” he said, making me blink.

“Where?”

“There.” He pointed at my button. “It’s thin and filmy like a translucent sticker. Kind of amazing, actually. Just like your earpiece.”

“Cane’s very likely going to make me remove it.”

“Assuming he detects it.”

“He seems to be familiar with your technology,” I reminded him, thinking of his hacking attempts.

Damien bent to retrieve something else from his bag of tricks. “Then it’s a good thing it’s not my tech.” He held up a mirror to show me my ear. “It’s Khalid’s tech.”

My eyebrows lifted. “Fascinating.” I couldn’t see any evidence of the comm unit at all.

“Like I said, amazing,” he murmured. “The sound frequency is also low, making it so only you should be able to hear me.”

I eyed the piece in his ear. It was clearly a different sort of communication unit since I could see it. However, I hadn’t been able to hear anything from it mere moments ago, so perhaps they were related technologies.

Or maybe he had left his visible for some reason.

“I don’t know if this tech has been tested around lycans, so a wolf might detect the earpiece,” Damien went on as he clicked something that opened the jet door. “Right, then. You’d better fucking keep my sister alive, or I’ll kill you myself.”

I grunted. There was nothing useful or relevant to say in response to that.

Thus, I said nothing.

And simply phased off of the plane, not bothering to wait for the stairs—which were apparently being wheeled up to the door I’d just leapt out of.

Ignoring it all, I teleported out of the airfield, only to pause as Ismerelda said,Cane says to tell you that there’s a car waiting for you at the hangar.

I see.I probably should have expected that.

With a low growl, I phased back to the tarmac where the stairs were now being affixed to the jet. “Great work so far,” Damien deadpanned, his voice an unwelcome sound in my ear.
