“We’re hiding under an alcove, little warrior. But your concern for my skin is noted.”

She rolled her eyes and went back to the scope while I playfully nipped at her neck. Maybe I could test her ability to focus while I?—

“Where the hell are you?” a voice suddenly demanded in my ear.

And there goes my fun,I thought with a sigh.

“On a rooftop with my mate,” I murmured. “I’m teaching her how to scout with a sniper rifle. Or I’m trying to, anyway. And I’m hoping to show her how to shoot with it as well. But the wind?—”

“A warning would have been fucking appreciated,” Damien interjected. “I almost killed Cedric.”

A snort sounded in response to that. “Like you, I’m not easily killed.”

“We almost tested that theory today,” Damien bit back.

Cedric snorted again. “You’re good, Damien. But I’m better.”

“Care to wager on that?”

“Sure.” The confidence in Cedric’s single-word acceptance reminded me a bit of myself.

“Name your target,” Damien demanded.

“Cane.”

“That’s everyone’s target,” Damien retorted. “Give me something else.”

“Are you two done flirting?” I interrupted.

“Jealous?” Damien asked.

“Of your and Cedric’s little bromance over there? No. Some of us are simply busy trying to work,” I reminded him.

Willow grunted at that.

I nipped at her throat again in response.

To which she pushed her hip sideways into my groin, making me growl.Maybe I would have some fun after all,I thought, my incisors taunting her pulse.

Only, the whimper she released in response wasn’t one of arousal. It resembled pain instead, causing me to pull back and stare at her profile.

Her eyes were closed.

Her forehead scrunched.

“Willow?” I asked, my palm going to her nape. “What is it? What’s happening?”

She groaned rather than answered, her face turning white as ripples of agony seemed to tremble through her being.

“Willow.”

I was only vaguely aware of Damien talking in my ear, my entire focus—my fuckingworld—revolving around my writhing mate. She curled into me, her cries breaking my damn heart.

“Talk to me,” I begged her, my palm still curled around her nape. “Fucking speak, Willow.”

“R-ring… ing…” she managed to get out, her hands going to her ears. “H-hurts…”

My gaze narrowed. “Another weapon.” It had to be. Only, this one appeared to be designed differently from the one Lilith had once used on me.
