‘He said you would know where to find it.’
‘Don’t tell me. Let me guess.’
Eddie chuckled. ‘You’re so competitive.’
‘I bet the key is on the hidden shelf beneath the bottom tier of the fountain,’ said Cara, closing her eyes briefly.
‘Bingo,’ he said.
‘I’ll have to find a way to get into the grounds as soon as possible. The agent has had some interest and it sounds like it might be snapped up from under our noses if we don’t get our act together.’
‘Let’s hope the key is still there then, two hundred years on.’
‘Thanks Eddie. I don’t know what we’d do without you.’
‘I’m pleased I can help,’ he said.
Cara stared out of the window at the blustery trees as she told him about the strange blue-eyed man watching her at The National Archives, and Sylvia’s vision that George was being held prisoner by the same man at what they thought was St. Mary’s Abbey.
‘She said something about karma, and he’s my lover from another life. She thinks he’s coming after me. I’m scared for George. What if Sylvia’s right?’
Eddie was silent for a moment.
‘What is it?’ said Cara. ‘That’s an ominous silence.’
‘I might know who the blue-eyed man is.’
‘Who? I’ve had the chills ever since I spotted him watching me...and the way he just vanished. It was spooky as hell.’
‘I didn’t want to scare you, but you know how I’ve been time travelling longer than you and George?’
‘Yeah.’
‘Well, there’s an ancient group of time travellers which has been around for thousands of years; they’re known as karmic warriors. And they are dangerous; extremely dangerous. They’re an evil sect of souls whose mission it is to eradicate Twin Flames to prevent the rising consciousness of the planet.’
‘They sound terrifying. What do they do, exactly?’
‘They’re sort of like the opposite of Twin Flames; instead of trying to reach ascension and guide the earth to peace, they seek revenge upon every soul who hurt them in a past life.’
Cara sat down on a kitchen chair and rubbed her eyes. ‘So, you think this guy is after me for vengeance?’
‘Possibly, but by the sounds of Sylvia’s vision, the blue-eyed warrior is after both of you and may be attempting to eradicate George from the Tudorville timeline,’ said Eddie.
‘I was right to be terrified for his life, then.’
Eddie continued, ‘Last thing I remember, you and I were together at Willow Manor figuring out how to break into St. Mary’s. We’ll see soon enough if my hunch is correct, and the karmic warrior is involved with the rebels.’
‘I wish I could go back to living a normal life, without bloody karmic hoodlums,’ Cara said.
‘Me too. But you wouldn’t be with George if you went back to your old life. And there is no going back anyway—this is all some kind of karmic test and we have to pass it together.’
‘I know,’ she said.
They agreed that being time travellers really sucked and then ended the call.
Willow Manor, York - Present day
Cara was too impatient to wait for George to return so she jumped in her car and headed over to Willow Manor. The tall iron gates stood open and as she neared the end of the driveway she drove through the busy car park at the front of the house and steered the nose of her black SUV around to the side car park, where there were several vacant spaces. Judging by the number of cars, the hotel was at full occupancy. She grabbed her phone, and as she emerged from the car a straywillow leaf blew towards her and rested on the shoulder of her jacket.
