“Okay, okay, stop it. I can’t breathe!” I scream. He stops abruptly, but his hands are spread out across my ribs. He’s looking at me like I’m hisfavorite meal and he hasn’t eaten in days. I clear my throat and shift out of his arms, needing space before I do something I’ll regret.

“W-What time is it?” I ask, changing the subject.

“Time for our final adventure,” he says, getting up and pulling me with him, practically dragging me towards the kitchen.

“Final adventure? What do you mean by final? Like after today, that’s it, no more adventures?”

“What? No. I plan to go on a lifetime of adventures with you. It’s all part of my plan.”Plan? He has a plan?

Cas rubs a thumb between my brows, smoothing out the wrinkles that must have been there from a frown I wasn’t aware of.

“All in time, Avery. All in time,” Cas says with a smirk.

“Okay, captain vague. What do you mean ‘all in time’?” My arms are crossed in front of me and I cock my hip to the side, causing Cas to laugh.

“Patience, freckles, patience.” His words are choked out behind his laughter. Jackass.

“You ready?” His face breaks out into a playful grin.

“Ready? Ready for what, exactly? And what’s with that sly grin of yours? I’m not sure how to feel about it,” I say wearily. He slowly makes his way over to me with a devilish look on his face. I let out a noise that falls between a gasp and a laugh when he tosses me over his shoulder and moves toward the kitchen.

“To bake cookies,” he says as he places me down on the counter, making my breath come out shaky.

“Uh, wait, what?” Clearly, words are a struggle today.

“Yes, cookies, like we used to do with your mom, remember?” he asks. I look at him. He is still somewhat sleepy, but incredibly sexy. God, why does he always have to look so damn sexy?

“Uh, yes. Cookies, right.” My face feels flushed, and words prove to be a continued struggle for me. He shoots me a cocky grin, clearly knowing how much he’s affecting me right now.

I swallow the emotion lodged in my throat at the memory. My heart feels both full and empty at the same time. Cas knows how important this specific memory is to me and the fact that he included this in whatever plan he has means a lot. I may miss my parents every day, but baking cookies with Cas makes me miss them a little less. Cas isn’t filling the void they left, but he’s helping patch the holes that loneliness has left on my heart.

Chapter 22

Avery

Always

Thiskitchenispurechaos as we work in tandem to gather everything we need. Bowls and measuring cups of various shapes and sizes are scattered everywhere. All the ingredients we need to bake cookies cover the kitchen island. I think of how messy this will be, but I can’t help to smirk at the fun we’re about to have.

I clap my hands together, something I’ve been known to do right before stating a game plan. “Okay,” I say, rubbing my hands together. “So, snickerdoodles for you and double chocolate chunkfor me?”

My mind might not always be neat and tidy, but coming up with a game plan is something I thrive off of. The anxious part of me craves control. So when things inside my brain feel disorganized, I find ways to gain control in other areas.

“You know me so well,” he says. I grab my wireless speaker and connect my phone to it, then hand it over to Cas, letting him select the playlist. We start baking as soon as the music starts playing.

At first, everything is going great. The two of us are working together as if we’ve been doing this for years. The air starts to become more charged when Cas reaches around me to grab something he needs, placing one of his hands on my hip. He could have easily asked me to grab it for him, but I got the sense that he wanted an excuse to touch me.I’mnotgoing to complain. Things only become more intense when he wraps his hands around my waist while I mix the dough. His breath tickles my neck, causing tiny jolts of energy to surge through my body.

“If you keep distracting me like this, the dough isn’t going to turn out right.” I chuckle.

“Maybe I want to distract you,” Cas whispers before sniffing my neck and letting out a groan.

“You smell good, like honeysuckle.” He spins me around while I have a spoonful of cookie dough, causing me to accidentally smack him across the face, leaving a trail of gooey cookie on his cheek.

“I’m so sor—" was all I managed to get out before I burst out laughing.

He takes a step away from me, tilting his head to the side, his expression unreadable. “Oh, you think that’s funny, do you?”

“Hey, you spun me around when youknewI had a spoonful of dough in my hand. This is on you.” He steps toward me, looking at me like a starved man in search of his next meal, causing all the moisture from my mouth to evaporate. I’m not sure what he’s planning to do, but I’m surprised when he dips his whole hand in the mixture.
