Sean took her lips tenderly at first, but as the kiss deepened, he found himself wanting more. The fact that she fit against him like the missing half of his soul nearly spun him out of control. He broke off the kiss but still held her close, his heart pounding in his chest. He hadn’t been prepared to feel such longing. It was terrifying and exhilarating at the same time.
“I apologized for being rude earlier.I hope you won’t take what I’m about to say as more bad manners, but I need you to leave.”He needed to get her out of here before he was guilty of more than rudeness.
Monica chuckled against his shirt, her voice breathless.“I think I get where you’re coming from.I’ll get while the getting is good.”She stepped away from him and didn’t stop until she was by the front door, sliding into her coat.“I have my last fundraiser tomorrow afternoon.I can probably find some last-minute details I need to take care of tonight.”
Sean stayed rooted to his spot by the tree.“Anything I can do to help tomorrow?”
“I don’t think so.”
“Can I see you tomorrow night?”
“I’d like that.”
When she reached for the doorknob, Sean finally crossed the room to hold the door for her.Despite the cold, he waited until she climbed into her car.He was still watching as her taillights faded into the distance.
He’d just kissed a woman who wasn’t Brittany and enjoyed it.A lot.He examined himself and realized the guilt he’d felt after last time wasn’t there.
Maybe his future held more than sorrow.
I have good things for you, son.The last year wasn’t meant to destroy you. There is a greater anointing and a deeper intimacy ahead if you will follow Me.
Sean closed his eyes as the words bubbled up from his soul.Oh, how he wanted to believe what he was hearing, but how could he trust an unseen future to the God who’d willingly wrecked his past?
Chapter 16
Monica’s eyes flutteredopen Saturday morning, and she greeted the day with a smile that reached all the way to her toenails. Her first thoughts weren’t about what she had to do today or tomorrow but about her time with Sean. She’d always been gung-ho when it came to helping others. She had gone a little overboard with the whole tree-decorating thing.
It’d worked out, though. She closed her eyes and relived the moment when his lips touched hers.Every nerve ending in her body tingled with the memory. That kiss had been the hottest thing she’d ever experienced, and he’d been so sweet about the need to put some distance between them.
Worked out was an understatement.
Monica had been dancing around the subject for weeks, but now she was sure that she’d fallen completely, madly in love with Sean Conklin.
But what about the job in Arizona?
It was a valid question, one that needed serious consideration. She hadn’t told Sean about her opportunity to work with Matthew Wright’s ministry. At first, he’d been obviously turned off at the mention of Matthew’s name so she’d kept it to herself. She’d barely known Sean then.
