“You sure about that?”
I look away from him. “She kept Jackson’s mother from him.”
“Is that where this anger is coming from?”
The pot we just smoked is keeping my anger at bay, but it still simmers beneath the surface. “She lied to him. What kind of a mother does that?”
“Maybe she was scared.”
I snort because Rachel wasn’t scared of anything. “She knew the threat had been eliminated. She was there to witness it. There was nothing left for her to be afraid of.”
“Is that what you think?”
“Yeah, I do. I set the motherfucker who trafficked Jenny and me on fire. She was there. She saw it all go down. And the senator … she sat through the trial.”
He reaches into his shirt pocket and pulls out an envelope.
Immediately, I begin to shake my head. “I don’t want it.”
“So, you’re not going to let her explain?”
“She had our entire lives to explain!”
Ray remains calm. “Areyouafraid?”
I take the letter from him and shove it in the pocket of my cut. “Let’s just go.”
“Where are we going?”
My head falls back against the seat, and I sigh. “Just take me to the cabin.”
Chapter Eighteen
Lily
Ilisten to my baby brother tell the club the news of his biological mother being alive. He’s stronger than I am. I’ve done nothing but cry since reading my letter from Rachel.
She was honest with me, and while I wish she would have done things differently, I understand. Jenny was stubborn.
My mind replays the day I pulled her over the railing on the bridge. I saved her life that day. Rachel did the same.
The club has mixed emotions. Me too … and I hate that.
My husband watches my face carefully as Jackson speaks. Aspen wanders around the group, hugging anyone who’s crying. It’s all too much for my heart to bear.
Dan wraps his arm around me and kisses the top of my head.
Eventually, my little niece makes her way toward me. She climbs up on my lap and places one tiny hand on each of my cheeks. “Auntie sad,” she says with a frown on her face.
“No, baby. Auntie is happy. These are happy tears.”
She doesn’t look like she believes me.
I tap the dragonfly that hangs at her neck. “Auntie is happy because the dragonfly is bringing us another angel.”
Her eyes light up. “Weally?” she asks, and both Dan and I laugh.
“Really,” I assure her, kissing her on her forehead.
