Brandy pulled back enough to look at him. “What?”
Ethan shrugged. “May first, does it mean anything to you?”
“Beltane,” Ryan and Serena said in unison.
“Beltane is traditionally considered the first day of summer in Ireland. Things are flourishing and growing,” Serena said.
Ethan’s brows furrowed. “Does that mean anything to you?” he asked Brandy.
She shook her head. “N—”
“The baby!” Ryan snapped.
Ethan glanced at his brother-in-law and found him alert, magic flowing freely from him. Brandy stepped from Ethan and faced Ryan. The force of her magic slid by and met Ryan’s.
“Now you two are being rude,” Serena muttered and moved to her counter.
Ethan ignored the couple for a moment, unable to resist the need to follow Serena with his eyes. When her head snapped to his, he dropped his gaze and gave himself a mental shake. “It’s great you two have that whole telepathic soul mate thing going, but would you like to share with the class whatever you figured out?”
Brandy’s hands cupped her belly. “My due date.”
Ethan raised his brows, waiting for more information.
When he nearly gave up, Serena spoke. “Your due date is the first?”
Brandy shook her head. “No, the doctor said May ninth.”
Serena shook her head. “I’d trust Ethan over your doctor.”
He turned from Brandy, and his heart thundered in his chest at the expression on Serena’s beautiful face. She trusted him beyond a reasonable doubt, even when he did not trust himself.
Serena tapped her temple. “Trust yourself,” she said as if she’d heard his self-doubt. “The goddess doesn’t make mistakes.”
Chapter 14
“Serena! I’m so glad you made it,” Brandy told her cheerfully as she let her into her brother’s two-story home. “This is Junior’s house. No way could we all have fit in our apartment. Come on, let me introduce you to everyone.”
She smiled politely. The happy bubble of love Brandy emitted was beautiful and yet a reminder of things Serena did not have in her own life. With a sharp inhale of breath, she pushed the reminder aside. It was no one’s fault she was unmarried and childless. At the thought, her eyes landed on Ethan’s.
“Everyone, I’d like you to meet Serena! She will be performing the ceremony, and she’s the high priestess of Ryan’s—our coven?” Brandy finished with a question, drawing Serena’s attention from the man she sensed walking in her direction.
“Your coven if you’d like for it to be,” she told Brandy, who replied with a fierce hug.
“I know things were different when we met, but I’m genuinely thankful for all your help—with meandEthan…”
Brandy looked between Ethan and Serena and gave them a knowing smile before walking away.
“Hey,” he said, his hands in his pockets as he offered her a tilt of his chin.
“Hi.”
“Come on, I’ll introduce you to the pains in the asses I love so much.”
His light mood helped ease some of the tension between them as he walked her around. The Broderick men were large teddy bears of men. Not all of them were hefty in size, but their essence engulfed her. They were natural protectors with gentle hearts guiding them.
Each man shook her hand and greeted her with a kind, welcoming smile. It was a surprise, considering they had only learned about their magical ancestry a few months ago. Junior’s wife, Debbie, had been polite, but her keen eyes watched Ethan and Serena carefully. Andrea, James’s wife, hugged Serena excitedly, but there, too, Serena noted she and Ethan were under careful observation.
Her spine tightened at the realization, and she wondered if Brandy or Ryan had mentioned anything to the others. Serena, lost in her thoughts, jumped when Ethan took hold of her elbow.
