Serena nodded. “I thought about what you said. This person must be pretty pissed off, someone who knows about magical wards.”
“I’d guess it’s on the more recent side too. That or they’ve been scheming for a while.”
Her eyes glazed over in thought, her pen tapping a steady beat on her journal. Ethan watched as the wheels turned in her mind. Serena paused with some sort of realization and wrote down a few names.
Ethan looked over her shoulder and read: Winter. Gerardo. Jade. Aja. Blair.
“Seriously? Blair?” he asked incredulously.
She gave him a dry laugh. “I wish it weren’t true. The best part?”
He raised his brows in reply.
“It wasn’t her biological name. She changed ittoBlair.”
“Wow” was all he could say until he watched her add another name to the list.
Junior.
“Junior? You don’t mean my brother.”
Serena held her head in one hand and looked at him. “You did say recently. He’s the most recent one, buthe doesn’t know anything about these charms, and your visions started before I pissed him off,” she said and scribbled long angry slashes through his name.
Ethan shook his head in amusement. “I’m not sure how you manage to piss off so many people, angel.” He peered down at the list and pointed at one name before she could respond. “This one? What’s the story behind her? Her, I’m assuming?”
“Yeah, her. Winter wanted to join the coven, but I didn’t think she would be a good fit.”
“Why not?” he asked and leaned back in his chair.
“Let’s say we don’t see eye to eye about our magic.”
Ethan thought about it for a moment. “You mean she messes with dark magic?”
“For one, yeah. We have enough demons and shit running around our city. The goddess gives us the powers we are destined to have, and when you mess with dark stuff…” She shook her head, her lips in a tight line. “Nope, I don’t want that in my life.”
Ethan leaned on his elbows. “Fair enough. Wouldn’t she be a good candidate for the person trying to hurt you? She messes with dark magic and she feels snubbed by you, one—if not the only—high priestess in town?”
“There is one other high priestess, but my power surpasses hers. I guess it could be her,” she said, staring at the list.
Ethan pointed at the next name. “What about Gerardo? Why would he want you dead?”
“I’m not sure I’d say he wants me dead, but I did manage to piss him off.”
When she did not elaborate, he waved his hand, asking her to continue.
Her cheeks flushed, and her eyes shifted away. “He is someone I was involved with.”
Ethan suddenly wondered if she’d been seeing anyone in the time he’d known her, and his heart stuttered at the thought. It wasn’t until recently they started talking about their personal lives.
He cleared his throat. “Why would he want you dead?” he asked, proud of himself when his words came out even.
Serena tipped her head in thought. “I mean, his ego was a bit bruised, but I don’t know that it was enough to say he wants me dead either.”
“Were you two together long?” he asked before dropping his gaze to study his shoes.
“No.”
“Who’s next on the list?” he asked his shoes after an awkward, tense moment of silence.
