Serena sensed someone at her side. Her head swam, and there was a light ache all around her head. She wondered if her grandmother’s message had been meant for her or for Ethan. His name alone caused her soul to reach for him.

“Ethan,”she called.

When his familiar energy reached back, she tried again.

“E, babe?”she said.

“Serena?”he said.

“I’m right here,” he told her as he took her hand in his.

Serena sighed at the sound of his loving voice. Lifting her lids was easier than the last time, but the bright light of the room caused her to wince. “So bright,” she said through her dry throat.

He released her hand, and she noted the room darken. “There, that should be better.”

Serena met his grim face, and her eyes welled with tears. “I’m so sorry.”

“Don’t be. Are you feeling any better?” he asked and brushed his lips against the top of her hands.

She ran a mental scan over her body. “Yeah,” she said with surprise.

Ethan nodded. “Brandy begged the doctor to let me back, and they agreed. Ryan suggested I use skin-to-skin contact to try to figure out what happened to you.”

“What happened to me?” she asked, even as her instinct criedpoison.

“Poisoning,” a woman said as she joined them.

Serena looked past Ethan. “I was poisoned?”

The doctor nodded. “We found traces of cyanide in your blood. Lucky for you, there was only enough to start making you sick before your family brought you in. Your sister-in-law mentioned champagne?”

Serena tried to remember but shook her head. “My mind’s still foggy.”

She nodded. “I’m not too surprised. We’d like to keep you overnight for observations to make sure we haven’t missed anything.” She faced Ethan. “If you’d like to stay with her, that seat converts into a recliner.”

“Yes, I’d very much like to,” he said and squeezed Serena’s hand.

Once the doctor slipped back out, Ethan turned toward Serena. “What do you remember?”

She shook her head. “Talking to you this morning—what day is today?”

“Thursday.”

“Shit, did I even go with Brandy to her final fitting?” she asked.

Ethan smiled. “You did. Everything happened while you were there.”

Serena laid her head back and closed her eyes. “I wish I could remember.”

“Don’t worry about it. Brandy was there and can fill in the blanks whenever your memories return.”

The image of an ethereal beauty came to mind, and Serena’s eyes popped open. “I think I had a vision with an ancestor.” Serena told him about the conversation with the woman. “What do you think?”

“I think everything is pointing to a single person who wants you dead. Between my visions, your vision, and the poisoning, it’s not very hard to decipher. What we need to figure out is thewho.”

Ryan, Brandy, and Peter joined them in the room. Each person entered and offered her a hug or kiss on the head.

Brandy sat on the bed, opposite of Ethan’s side, and held Serena’s hand. “Are you going to be okay?”
