Serena glanced from her friend to Ethan and the others. “I need your help.”
By the time Ethan finished catching everyone up and Brandy told her about the fitting, Serena was exhausted. Peter offered to search her shop and apartment himself after swinging by the dress shop. They hoped he would notice the person’s scent in one of the two places. It was a slim chance, as dozens of people stepped through both doors on a daily basis.
She scooted over, making room for Ethan and patted the bed. “Join me?”
“You realize Sgt. Nurse is going to rip me a new one,” he said as he climbed in and pulled her close.
His scent wafted toward her, soothing her down to her bones. “Too bad.”
Ethan chuckled. “Thanks, I love you too.”
The room became painfully quiet before she forced herself to look up. He cupped her cheek and smiled. Their lips brushed softly, and she sighed into his mouth, regretting they could not be together in the hospital bed.
“Serena?”
“Yeah?”
“Look at me.”
Once she did as he asked, he pressed another kiss to her lips. “I love you.”
His words caused the butterflies in her stomach to stir. “I love you too,” she whispered back, making sure to hold his gaze so he could see just how much she loved him.
“Angel?”
“Yeah?” she repeated, amusement coating the single word as he shoved something into her hand.
“Marry me?”
This time her heart stuttered, and her belly flopped. “Excuse me?”
“Please marry me.” His words were firm, and she felt a wave of nerves hit him like a bolt of lightning. He helped her open the box in her hand, and her jaw dropped. In the center was a beautiful princess-cut diamond ring with side stones. “Angel?”
“Yes!” she nearly shouted before kissing him hard. A grin split her face in two as he slid the ring on her finger.
“Everything okay in here?” a nurse asked from the doorway.
“She’s really excited the ring fits this time,” Ethan said, cutting off any chance Serena would reply.
“What was that about?” she asked after the nurse stepped out. Serena stretched her hand and could not stop staring at how it sparkled, even in the dim light.
Ethan chuckled and pulled her knuckles to his mouth. “Ryan fibbed a little to make sure they let me in. As far as the nurses are concerned, we were already engaged.”
A horrifying thought occurred to her. “You didn’t just propose to continue the lie, did you?”
He tucked her into his neck. “No, angel. I was actually finishing up at the jewelers when I got the call you were on your way here. I’m guessing you didn’t notice I’m home a day earlier?”
Serena thought back to their last phone conversation and swat him. “Oh my God! I thought I heard a call for boarding when we last spoke. You claimed it was a movie on in the background!”
Ethan chuckled. “Just a little fib. Nothing to curse me about.”
She sighed and melted into him. “I’m glad you fibbed because now I don’t have to be all alone here.”
“I would have done everything to make it home, and you never would have been alone. Brandy cares about you and knows what you mean to me. She would have been glued to your side until I arrived.”
Serena yawned. “You Broderick’s… make my life better…”
