Junior burst into laughter. He was standing to Serena’s other side, closer to Max and Peter. “He’s not wrong, brother.”
“Junior,” Carter said. “Dad was killed by one of these—”
“Thesewhat?” Anger flared through Serena.
“Angel?”Ethan asked.
“No, babe. The same way not all witches are bad, not all werewolves are. He doesn’t get to lump Peter in with the monster who killed your father.” Her heart pounded as she stared daggers at her future brother-in-law.
Something brushed against her fingers, and she was forced to look down. Peter nudged her again until she lowered to his level.
“He wants a hug,” Max told her.
Serena smiled. She wrapped her arms around his soft fur and felt her anger slowly disappear. Peter pulled back and she released him, laughing when he rolled onto his back.
“Peter, you’re so gross,” Brandy called with a shake of her head.
He jumped to his paws and rounded the room, spending an extra moment with each person there. They all watched as he paused, then took off.
“Where’s he going?” Max asked.
Ryan shrugged. “You’re the only one who can talk to him right now.”
Serena stepped toward Ethan and lay her head against his chest. “Sorry.”
“For?”he asked.
“Getting so pissed at your brother,”she told him and sighed.
Ethan kissed her head as Peter came down the stairs. The strange glow in his eyes had Serena pulling back and patting Ethan.
Max hurried to the door and Peter ran out.
“What’s going on?” Serena asked.
Max shook his head. “I don’t know. He asked me to open it, and it sounded serious.”
Serena, Ethan, Brandy, and Ryan exchanged glances. The thumping in her chest became louder with each passing second.
“What?” Junior asked. “I saw that look you guys just exchanged. What’s going on?”
Ethan sighed. “We aren’t really sure.”
Serena focused on the open door as Ethan caught his family up on everything that had happened, including the last twenty-four hours. A mixture of exhaustion and anger swirled within her. She was tired of some unknown entity messing with her life, and once she figured out who it was, there would be hell to pay.
“Poisoned?” Carter asked. “But there’s no sign of it.”
His strange words made her face him. “What do you—you’re a doctor… Oh my God, after all this shit, you’re telling me your power is linked to your job?”
Her words were not clear, but she could not help it. Moments ago, Carter had gone entirely left brain on them, when in reality, it was his inability to believe and trust even if it was right in front of him.
Brandy must have understood what Serena was trying to say and stepped in front of her brother. “What do you see?”
Carter ran a hand over the back of his neck, clearly uncomfortable with what he had been asked. “I—”
“Tell me!” Brandy snapped.
He focused on her, his eyes scanning her from the top of her head down to her feet. “You’ve broken your right humerus—”
