Ethan recalled every sensation he’d had during the out-of-body experience. He described the scent, the atmosphere, and the strange way their voices sounded, and he explained how she’d accused him of something.

“If I wanted to kill someone, I’d give them a heavy dose and be done,” Carter stated. “It sounds like she’s been drugged. But why?”

“Because the person is toying with her,” Junior said. “It sounds like whoever has her wants her to feel powerless, like she’s made them feel.”

Ryan pointed at the strips of paper at Ethan’s side. “What are those names?”

“A list of possible suspects.”

Ryan pushed to his feet and jogged to the door, calling back. “Your car is in the driveway, right?”

“Yeah, keys are on the front table.”

Everyone sat in silence, thinking about what Ethan had shared. There was something strange about the way Volark had looked at Serena. It had not been quite like the Volark he remembered from when they went up against him.

“I didn’t want to interrupt earlier… but Peter lost the trail,” Max stated. “He said he’d be at Serena’s shop looking for clues. He’s calling on his wolves to search, but without the cloaking spell, it will take longer.”

Before Ethan could thank his brother, Ryan ran into the room. “I’m assuming you haven’t had any other women with long curly hair in your car?”

“No,” Ethan mumbled in confusion.

“Can someone sterilize a knife for me?” Ryan asked and shut his eyes. He muttered under his breath, and an empty glass bowl appeared in his hand. Ryan dropped the long strand he’d found into the center as Andrea handed him a knife. “Thanks.”

Brandy joined them on the floor. “What are you doing, Rye?”

“A twist on a locater spell. As soul mates, Ethan and Serena are linked. If the person who took her is on one of these strips, I want her strand of hair to bind around it. Ethan, I’m going to need some of your blood.”

Ethan nodded and held out his hand with no question. If it took blood to find Serena, Ryan could have it all. His jaw clenched when the blade pierced his skin. He watched the metal slide across his palm, and blood flowed slowly.

“Make sure it drips over every name. It doesn’t need to drench them, but it has to touch them all,” Ryan instructed as he handed Andrea the knife. “Now, hold your hands over the bowl and repeat after me.”

“Et sanguis revelare,”they chanted and watched the items in the bowl ebb and flow until the single strand of hair wound itself around one strip of paper.

“It worked!” Brandy said with awe.

Junior leaned over them. “Well, who is it?”

Chapter 32

Whatever drug she had been given was losing its hold on her. Serena could not understand why Ethan wanted to hurt her.

“He wouldn’t. Now snap out of it, child! You’re a Bishop, and we overcome our obstacles.”

Serena gave a small shake of her head to disperse the sound of her grandmother’s voice. “What did he give me?” she muttered, her voice still holding a slight slur.

“For Goddess’s sake! Serena Lanie Bishop, use that beautiful heart of yours, since your brain is of no use!”

“Wakey, wakey,” a dark and familiar voice said.

Forcing her lids to open, she stared up into Volark’s vortex of a mouth. A jolt of adrenaline shot through her as she sat up awkwardly. Her hands and feet were bound. With the rush of blood pumping through her, she was the most awake she had been in hours.

With her gaze locked on the demon, she processed whether Volark could really be alive or if she was hallucinating. If the voice had indeed been her grandmother, she needed to heed her advice.

Needing more time, since the demon was not attacking her, she pretended her lids were growing heavy.

“No! Stay awake!” Volark whined as Serena drew large heavy breaths and bobbed her head.

Following her heart would not help with Volark, so her grandmother’s words must be referring to Ethan. Flashes of their walk hand in hand in the neighborhood, to the sound and sting of electricity piercing her skin, came back to her. She debated again why Ethan would hurt before realizing he would not.
