“Wake up!” Volark screamed and sent another bolt of electricity through Serena’s body.

Her body arched, and her eyes widened in pain.

“Are you awake?” Volark asked and raised the stun gun so Serena could see it.

As the pain lessened, Serena began seeing red. “I’m awake,” she said, trying to clear the pain from her voice.

When what could only be described as a grin appeared on the demon’s large black hole of a mouth, he stepped forward. “I’m not sure. You don’t look very awake.”

Serena adjusted herself into a sitting position away from him and snapped, “And I said, I’m awake!” Her magic pushed outward with the force of her words, and she spotted a flash of uncertainty in Volark’s eyes.

Volark’s spine straightened after his hesitation. “Remember who’s in charge here!”

“Whoisin charge? Last I checked, we killed you.” Serena made herself look comfortable. It was clear this Volark was not the same as the one they had killed.

Volark laughed, and his hands became fists at his side. “I’m in charge, you little hag!”

“Ethan? Any chance you know whether Aja picked up any other magical abilities?”she called.

“My apologizes,” Serena said sweetly. “Could you then tell me what you want with me?”

“We don’t know if she has. Any idea where you are?”he asked.

“Can you check in on me and see?” Serena asked, still unsure if she could trust her eyes. “Do you recognize it?”

“To teach you who really has the power!” Volark snarled.

Serena pushed aside how alarming it was each time the demon spoke. An idea formed in her mind, and the more she thought on it, the stronger of a pull it had on her gut. “And only you, a high-level demon, has more power than me? No other witch?”

Volark stuttered before snapping. “No! You’re weak!”

Serena nodded and shrugged a shoulder. “I suppose it depends on what you define weakness as.”

“Angel, you’re in the old mansion we killed Volark in! One of those blood stains must be from one of the wolves who was injured!”Ethan stated.“We’re on our way!”

“Be careful! I haven’t seen anyone else, but that doesn’t mean she’s working alone,”she warned.

“I don’t need a coven of witches to do magic,” Volark snarled.

Serena cocked her head to the side. “You needed Aja to kidnap Ryan, and you needed the lycans and other demons. In the end, youstilldidn’t get Brandy’s power. Why did you use Aja anyway?”

Volark’s eyes widened at the mention of Aja. “She seduced the mate of course.”

Serena laughed. Now truly understanding the depth of the bond between mates, she knew there was not a person alive who could seduce one away. She supposed Ethan knew it too, but seeing it in his nightmare had shaken him too much.

“Ryan wouldn’t have touched the bottoms of Aja’s feet, let alone be seduced by her.”

Volark yelled, and Serena was thrown backward against the wall. She winced as her interlocked hands dug into her lower back.

“Anything change?”Ethan asked.

She gasped and met Volark’s eyes. “I’m not sure why you’re upset. Aja’s usefulness ended the moment we arrived.”

“Because it took a few of you to—”

“Scare her off?” Serena asked.

“I’m not sure if anyone else is here but I’m not—”
