The banging of Serena’s head against the wall was confirmation enough as Aja stormed off. Serena shook the pain away, but bursts of lights flashed behind her eyes.
A shimmer drew her attention to the ceiling.“Revelare!”
In each corner of the musty basement, a satin bag with herbs and crystals hung. A lit candle burned against the opposite wall, to strengthen Aja’s spell. The rug needed to be replaced, and blood stained various corners.
She finally recognized her surroundings, and it filled her with anger. Aja’s charade was over, and she needed to let Ethan know she wasn’t at the mansion. With the farmhouse being on the outskirts of town, she knew she was on her own.
Chapter 33
Ethan faced Brandy and Ryan. “She’s at the mansion. Let’s go.”
“Wait!” Junior snapped. “What mansion? And you’re not going in there half-cocked without knowing who else is there. I know you love her, but—”
Ethan stepped toward his brother. “But what? Are you telling me you wouldn’t do everything in your power to get Debbie back?”
A gentle hand squeezed his bicep. “E? Wewillget Serena back, but we do need a plan,” Brandy told him.
“Give me your hand,” Carter called from his other side.
Ethan’s brows knitted in confusion, but he moved automatically. Carter hovered a hand over Ethan’s bloody palm, and a tingly warmth spread across the gaping wound. He looked down once the sensation ended and noticed it was sealed and all that remained was dry blood.
“Thanks,” he told Carter as Ethan opened and closed his fist, noting it was as if he had never been cut.
“Did she say if there were others like last time?” Ryan asked.
Ethan shook his head. “She doesn’t know. Max?”
“Yeah?”
“Please call Peter. Tell him she’s at the same mansion Ryan was held, and we don’t know how many there are.”
Max nodded and accepted Brandy’s phone. Ethan glanced around the mess they had made of Max’s home, but he knew it could not be helped.
“Go on,” Brandy said as things lifted into the air. “Ryan and I will be right behind you.”
Junior’s meaty hand squeezed Ethan’s shoulder as Brandy flew the items they’d used over everyone’s heads and back to their places. “I’ll go with you,” he said, and Ethan felt the power of his magic.
“Junior,” Ethan said between clenched teeth.
He released Ethan’s shoulder and stepped back. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to—just want to have your back.”
Ethan nodded as Junior called back his magic. “I’d love your help, but you really need to work on controlling that suggestion,” he said and chuckled.
“Please. Let me at least drive so I can be there for you. What if you get a vision or something while you’re behind the wheel? Serena needs you to get there in one piece.”
Ethan thought on it a moment. “We’ll let you drive, but you’re not going in.”
“I’d go but I don’t know if I’d be more of a liability,” James said, concern on his face.
Andrea linked her fingers with James. “We’ll call if anyone comes to James.”
James nodded. “Go get your woman back.”
Ethan hugged Debbie after she kissed Junior good-bye, and they headed out. By the time they reached the front door, Brandy and Ryan had Max’s place nearly sorted. He was not sure how they had accepted their magic so easily. Then again, he’d seen Carter and Edward fight it.
“You see how Car healed you?” Junior asked as he reached for his seatbelt.
Ethan chuckled. “For someone who’s in denial of our ancestry, he sure knows how to use his gift.”
