“Right?” Junior asked in agreement.
Ethan backed out of the driveway as Brandy and Ryan jogged to their car. For a second, Ethan debated telling her to stay behind so there would be no risk to the baby, but he knew better. Brandy would never purposely harm her child, but she also would not stand back while he needed her.
“Tell me about this Aja,” Junior said.
Ethan shook his head. “Not sure there’s much to tell.” He updated Junior on Aja’s part in Ryan’s kidnapping and her connection to Volark. “Past both those things, all I know is when Serena’s grandmother was the coven’s oracle, Aja’s aunt was the high priestess, and her mother helped lead the coven.”
Junior nodded and became lost in his thoughts.
“Anything change?”he asked Serena.
“I’m not sure if anyone else is here but I’m not—”
Her words were cut off as a burst of pain rolled through her head. Ethan winced and grabbed the side of his head.
“What’s wrong?” Junior asked.
Ethan shook his head. “Pain just burst through Serena’s head.”
“Angel?”he called, feeling a thin wall rise between them.
“I don’t understand how it all works,” Junior stated. “You and Serena are connected somehow?”
He looked at his oldest brother and tried not to grimace. “We’re soul mates. When we had sex, we became bound and now have a telepathic connection.”
Ethan let the words settle as he considered the mansion they would have to enter once more.
“Debbie and I don’t have that…” Juniors words lingered in the car like a thick blanket.
Ethan lowered a window when he could not take it anymore. “I don’t think you two are soul mates in the same sense as me and Serena are. Maybe because Debbie has no magical ancestry? Either way, it doesn’t matter. You two are perfect for each other.”
Ringing filled the car with an incoming call, saving them both from continuing the awkward conversation.
“It’s Brandy,” Junior said as he pressed the call button on the steering wheel.
“Hey!”
“Peter just called to let us know they’re en route. He should be arriving around the same time we do. I told him it was Aja, and he didn’t seem too surprised by the fact.”
Ethan nodded. “Does he happen to know more on Aja? Does anyone?”
“When Aja took me, she was hell-bent on getting Brandy’s powers to Volark because he promised to make her stronger,” Ryan said.
“Is Serena stronger?” Junior asked.
“To be honest, Brandy is the strongest witch I’ve met. Serena became high priestess because she was stronger than Aja,” Ryan said.
Junior shifted next to Ethan. “Then why isn’t Brandy the high priestess?”
Ryan’s chuckle rang through the car as Ethan smirked.
“Because I want nothing to do with leading a coven of witches,” Brandy snapped. “Sorry. It’s just that this keeps coming up.”
Junior guffawed. “Touchy, touchy. Okay, so if Aja wanted more power, then she’d make another power play for Brandy. Why is she after Serena? Did these two have some beef?”
“More like jealousy.” Ryan sighed before continuing. “They used to be good friends growing up, but I think Aja felt dissed by the ancestors when Serena had been gifted with stronger powers, and her aunt, the high priestess then, didn’t counter Serena’s claims.”
“If Aja’s powers aren’t as strong, how did she get an upper hand?” Junior asked.
