“Really?” Debbie asked.

Andrea grinned. “It’s all in the past. No need to get embarrassed. Before I got with James, Brandy and I both slept with—”

“Tommy LeTourneau!” Brandy squeaked before covering her face.

Serena’s brows rose to her hair line. “At the same time?”

Brandy and Andrea paused before bursting into giggles. “No, but we should have. I mean, they do say you should experiment with a friend, and youarea hottie,” Brandy said, tossing Andrea a saucy wink.

Andrea laughed. “Tommy wouldn’t have been able to handle us both.”

“Who’s Tommy?”

While the others froze at the angry male voice, Serena turned and slammed him in the chest with a burst of air. Her eyes widened when he hit the doorframe and dropped to a knee.

“James!” Andrea cried and ran past Serena.

Serena met Brandy’s surprised eyes and mouthed,I’m so sorry! She turned back toward James. “I’m so sorry, James. Are you okay?”

His answering glare caused her shoulders to drop. Andrea looked up, but Serena could not bear to see another set of upset eyes directed at her. Serena rushed past them as Brandy told Andrea to take James to Carter.

Serena gathered the loose material of her dress and hurried down the staircase. She was on the verge of crying, something she had not done in a very long time. Near the bottom, she heard voices but kept her eyes on the last couple of steps.

“Serena? What’s wrong?” Junior asked.

She shook her head and flew past him, toward the front of the house. A commotion of voices could be heard behind her, as she assumed James met Junior with Andrea in tow. Serena could only imagine what they would think of her after she’d hurt their brother.

In all her years as a high priestess, she’d had full control of her powers. Never had she hurt someone without intending to. A tear slipped free as two large hands grabbed her forearms.

“Eh! No tossing me around,” Peter said as he pulled her back to his front.

The moment the tension in her body released, he did too. Peter rounded her and bent to face her head-on. His brows drew together as his thumb swiped the tear from her cheek. “I’m pretty sure it’s too early to cry.”

“How’d you find me so fast?” she muttered and directed her gaze to his ear, unable to meet his eyes.

Peter tapped the ear she stared at. “Great hearing, and even on two feet I’m damn fast, remember?”

The weight of everything became too much and another tear slipped free. Peter sighed and rose to his full height as he pulled her to his chest. Serena could not hold it back any longer and cried. She cried for the fear she’d lived through, the fear of losing Ethan, and the fear of losing the new family she was soon to join. In that moment, she realized how alone she had been before Ethan had come into her life.

Never would she have expected to find comfort in the heavy smell of dirt. She and Peter had managed to form the friendship they’d never had when she was with Ryan. The big alpha was kinder than she could have imagined.

Chapter 39

“Peter has her, but whatever you do, don’t startle her,” Debbie told Ethan as he answered Junior’s call.

Don’t startle her?

Ethan stepped outside, and her soft cries reached his ears. He experienced her grief before Junior’s call and had already started the frantic search. Ethan did not know what had happened, but his heart stung with her pain.

Peter raised a finger as Ethan moved toward them, the werewolf’s lips mouthingslowly. Ethan’s brows knit in confusion as he tried to understand why everyone was warning him to approach her carefully.

What felt like hours later, he reached them, and Peter carefully handed Serena into Ethan’s arms. She was lost in her mind and did not seem to notice the exchange. He looked at his friend with confusion. Peter tapped his own temple in silent suggestion, to which Ethan nodded.

“Hey, beautiful, want to tell me what’s wrong?”he asked.

Silence.

“Shh,” he cooed. “Everything’s going to be okay.”
