“I mean, if it’s too much work, I’m sure another coven is willing—”
A gust of wind pushed into his back, shoving him toward the curtain as a deep chuckle vibrated through him.
“Testy, testy!”
Chapter 7
“Max?” Ethan called when he found the clinic unlocked and the front desk unmanned.
“Back here!”
“Did you mean to leave the front unlocked?”
Max crawled out of a large cage in the back corner. “No, I thought I locked it,” he said. His brows knit together in thought.
“What’s wrong with that one?” Ethan asked, nodding at the large Great Dane Max had been attending to.
Ethan felt a pulse of magic from Max when he faced the animal. “The big baby ate a sock, and it got stuck in his intestines. I operated on him this morning, and he’s staying overnight.”
“Which means you’re staying,” Ethan said when he noticed the made-up cot in the corner.
Max shrugged. “Can’t leave my babies.”
Ethan dropped into a hard-back plastic chair to his right. “So, what’s up? You sounded desperate.”
Max sat on the cot, his back against the brick. “I almost killed Moose.”
Ethan’s brows drew together in confusion. “Moose? Who’s Moose?”
Max tipped his head toward the direction he had come from. Ethan nodded carefully, taking a second to really study his brother. It was then he noticed the dark circles under his eyes.
“How’d you almost kill Moose? What’s going on?”
“The surgery didn’t go as planned. Sometimes complications happen, but do you know how hard it is to operate on a dog who’s levitating?”
Ethan’s eyes rounded and his lips pinched tight, but he remained quiet.
“I mean, I’d finally accepted I was some sort of freak who could communicate with animals when I was in high school, but having shit move when you don’t do the touching? What in the actual fuck?” Max dug his hands into his hair, making it stick up on end.
“If it’s any consolation, I’ve been working on mine and checked in on Junior during the middle of his damn O-face,” Ethan replied with a shrug.
Max guffawed. “I’m not really sure almost killing a living being compares, but that is pretty fucked up.” They sat in comfortable silence before he continued. “Wait, so you can see us when you aren’t even around? How does that—”
“How do you communicate with animals?”
Both men sighed, realizing that truly understanding their own gifts, let alone each other’s, was a migraine waiting to happen.
“If you’re showing signs of telekinesis, you’re going to have to get it under control. Not only for your safety but for all those around you. Bran, Ryan, Serena, or I can help you there. Brandy had the hardest time since she didn’t even know it was happening, but she’s got it locked down now.”
Max rubbed his mouth and sighed. “Anything to feel my kind of normal again.”
Ethan pushed to his feet and made his way to the standing desk in the center of the room. After rummaging through the organizers, he found office supplies they could use. He grabbed the plastic chair and dropped it in front of Max, who was watching him closely.
“The first part is the hardest.”
“Yeah? What’s that? Because I nearly nicked Moose’s artery when he raised off the table…”
Ethan’s heart went out to his brother. He knew Max loved each animal under his care, and what had happened was clearly taking a toll on him. Ethan would do whatever he could to help. Max needed a crash course in not only the telekinesis but the same cleansings Serena had taught him.
