“Ethan? What all did you see in your visions again?” Brandy asked.
He recounted his visions, including the nightmare. Ethan did his best to tell them everything without emotion and to see things from an outsider’s perspective. He also included the incident with the tubar in Serena’s shop for added measure.
“It sounds like Aja’s been watching Serena rather closely. Any chance another witch hasn’t turned sides? Blackmailed into helping her perhaps?” Junior asked.
Ethan ran a hand through his hair. “Serena doesn’t trust easily. Her circle of friends is very small. She didn’t want Aja anywhere near the shop, especially not after the stunt she pulled with Ryan and Brandy. In order to get inside, she’d have to be nearly invisible.”
“Invisible?” Junior asked.
After a few breaths of silence, Ryan spoke. “I’ve never heard of someone with the ability to be invisible. We can cloak ourselves, like we did when you and I first met Junior, but Serena’s got wards in place to prevent someone from doing it in the store. As far as out in the open, yeah I suppose Aja could have cloaked herself and followed Serena.”
Ethan shook his head. “Serena hasn’t left the store much lately. It’s clear Aja has been playing a sick game—I see Peter.”
Junior moved the car into the closest spot to where the werewolf stood, and he shut off the engine.
“Thanks for coming,” he told Peter over the hood of the car.
Peter nodded. “I haven’t heard or sensed anything from inside since I got here two minutes ago.”
Ryan and Brandy approached them as they joined Peter on the sidewalk.
“Xander is on the other side now,” he said and chuckled. “He’s none too pleased to be hiding in those bushes again.”
“He already gets pissy around Serena, so I can only imagine,” Ryan said with a roll of his eyes.
“Babycakes, any chance you can do that communication spell again since we don’t have Max?” Peter asked.
“No worries, we decided to follow you all, since no one thought to ask us along,” Max called from behind them.
Ethan smirked as Max and Carter joined them. “I didn’t think you’d want to come.”
Max’s face became serious. “E, there isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for one of you. Serena’s important to you, so she’s important to me.”
Ethan pulled his brother in for a quick firm hug. “Thanks.”
Carter shrugged. “It’s not like you can go to the ER if something happens.”
Not knowing what caused Serena’s head to burst with pain had his stomach in knots. “All right, let’s go get her,” he demanded, tension rolling through his muscles.
“Ethan’s right, let’s go get my sister-in-law,” Brandy said with a clap of her hands.
Peter shook his head. “Ethan, you want to see if anything’s changed?”
He nodded and drew in a deep breath. The wall that had blocked him from Serena earlier was no longer there and he sensed her confidence mixing with anger. Serena was facing off with Aja, and he realized his grave error immediately. “Fuck!”
“What?” Peter growled.
Ethan’s gaze met Peter’s glowing one. “She’s not here.”
Chapter 34
Calling on her ancestors, Serena leaned forward and yelled,“Revelare!”
The cloaking spell around them lowered as she fell to her knees. Raising her head to the form before her, she stared into Aja’s pitch-black eyes. With a wave of Serena’s hand, she shoved the witch against the wall.
“Well, well, well. What do we have here?” Serena asked, rising to her feet.
Aja narrowed her eyes, and a burst of magic pushed Serena down onto one knee.
