Holding on to the anger he had for a dead woman would not make his life better. It could just as easily ruin the beauty in his life.

He threaded his fingers with Serena’s and brought her knuckles to his mouth. It seemed Serena’s recovery was in the goddess’s hands, as was Aja’s passing.

“Ethan? Where’d you go?” Serena asked from the passenger seat.

He pulled his car into a spot in front of Sage Beginnings and put the engine in park before his mind wandered off without him. “Let’s get a place together.”

“What?” she asked.

“Let’s get a place together,” he repeated after turning toward her. “This has always been your place, and I have my apartment, but I want to move in together. Somewhere where we can start a family one day and we can callours.”

Her jaw muscle clenched as she looked out the windshield at her building. He forced himself to remain still, giving her time to process his words. His heart squeezed when he noted her eyes fill with tears.

“What if I’m unable to have your children?” she asked barely above a whisper.

His stomach clenched at the pain in her voice. “Then we consider adoption, unless you don’t want any children…”

Her sad smile broke his heart in two. “I do, and I’d like that very much.”

“Serena?”

“Hmm?”

“What makes you think you can’t have kids?” He forced the question out even as he dreaded the answer. He wished he could have held her during this conversation, but it was probably best they didn’t.

Serena wrung her hands, her head dropping back against the headrest of the car seat. Her shoulders, thinner after her time at the hospital, shrugged. “I’d seen a doctor about really bad abdominal pains, and he found both of my fallopian tubes blocked.”

Ethan nodded as he cupped her face, unable to hold back from touching her any longer. “Well, when we cross that bridge, we can see what our options are.”

She studied him a moment before muttering “okay” against his lips.

The touch of her tongue against his lit him from the inside out. He had missed her, and while he was eager to make love to her, he held back.

“Come on,” he muttered and pressed a quick kiss to her mouth. “I’m sure you could use a cup of tea after a warm bath.”

Her brows drew together, and her mouth pulled into a tight line. “You were there when Carter gave me a great bill of health, right?”

Ethan chuckled over the hood of his car. “Yes, angel. I was.”

Serena harrumphed at him and unlocked the front door to the shop. “Did we keep the shop closed while I was out?”

He locked the door behind him as the bells bounced against the glass, chiming with the movement. “Brandy helped quite a bit when she wasn’t working. Ryan, Cable, and Iris also pitched in when I couldn’t be here. What?” he asked when an odd look passed across her face.

“Nothing. I guess I just didn’t realize how many people were in my corner,” she said before halting at the curtain. “You smell that?” she whispered.

Ethan breathed in and smirked at the earthy smell. “Oh—”

“Hey! Welcome—”

Caught off guard, Serena tossed Peter backward.

Ethan’s eyes widened in surprise as Serena covered her mouth.

“Oh, no! Peter!” she said and rushed forward.

Ethan chuckled as the werewolf growled at Serena’s help.

“So much for new beginnings…” Peter grumbled.
