Max laughed. “I work with nice girls with no history every day.”

“No bestiality, brother!” Ethan joked.

“Ew!” Max and Serena cried in unison.

Max laid his head back on the couch. “Seriously, if I could meet a woman who was calm on the outside but passionate inside… someone who was independent but let me take care of her… funny and sexy… Am I just asking too much?”

Serena sighed and laid her head on Ethan’s shoulder. “No, Max, you’re not asking too much.”

Chapter 38

“How do I look?” Serena asked Ethan as she gave a spin.

His answering grin made everything right in her world. “I’m pretty sure you’re not supposed to outshine the bride,” he said, capturing her around the waist.

With her back to his front, she studied them in the mirror. Ethan wore a navy-blue suit with a white, long-sleeved shirt and no tie. His hair was freshly cut along the sides, and the top was long enough to style back. Dressy and yet relaxed for his sister’s outdoor wedding.

Brandy had helped Serena choose her flowy, long-sleeved, wrap-around maxi dress with pink flowers over a navy-blue background. Her curly hair was loose, and flowers were woven into her long locks.

“I don’t think it counts if the bride picked my dress,” she said, meeting his gaze.

Ethan chuckled. “Well, I can’t wait to get you out of it.”

His hands wandered, and she swatted him as she laughed. “Oh no you don’t, Mr. Broderick! We need to go!”

He threw up his hands in defense. “We’ve only signed the papers for the house, and you’re already denying me sex.”

Serena burst into laughter at the pitiful look on his face. “You’re pathetic. Don’t sit there and act like you didn’t have me on my hands and knees only hours ago.”

Ethan pouted his bottom lip and tipped his head to the side. “Hoursago…”

After dragging Ethan out of his apartment filled with boxes, they drove to Junior’s home. He had the largest backyard for the service and reception. Brandy had decided to stay the night there so she could wake and get ready—and, of course, stay hidden from her groom.

Ethan dropped off Serena at the house before driving to the nearby parking lot where guests were being transported to and from the house. People dressed in crisp, white shirts and bow ties directed guests along the side of the house to the back, where caterers provided hors d’oeuvres and drinks.

The backyard looked magical with white twinkling lights and sheer, white linen curtains framing the altar. The center aisle was designated by the same sheer white linen, wooden fold-up chairs formed rows on each side with sprigs of eucalyptus and wildflowers decorating the chairs on the ends, and patio heaters were spaced evenly throughout the yard.

She noted the few service workers around were occupied, as were the first set of guests. With a slight wave of her hand, she muttered a spell to make everyone oblivious to their surroundings. Serena then called forth an arrangement of flowers dangling from the pole at the altar. Next, she placed a rose quartz heart stone and a jade heart stone on the altar. In the center sat a tall, orange candle infused with a love and happiness herbal blend she would use for their final blessing.

With everything she wanted in place, Serena flicked her wrist, and all was back to normal.

“What are you doing?” Peter asked, causing her to jump and send him flying back a few feet.

Serena looked around and found a few curious eyes in their direction. “Ah! Why would you scare me like that? You know I’m going to push you away!”

Peter rose from his crouch and glanced back. “Sorry, I thought you heard me.”

When he neared her, she hissed. “Seriously, don’t fucking scare me like that. Are you okay?”

“I’m good. You’re a bit jumpy.”

She cast her eyes down and sighed. “You just caught me off guard.”

Peter pulled her into him. “Liar. You can talk about it with any of us, you know.”

“Talk about what with any one of who?” Ethan asked.

Serena jumped back again but plastered a smile across her face. “This one just scared me is all. I better go check in with Ryan to see if Brandy had anything she wanted me to do.”
