A sudden burst of air swirled around them, pushing Max a step back and causing Ethan’s hair to stick out every which way. “I take that as a no?”
“Hello, Max,” Serena said and kissed his cheek without acknowledging Ethan’s question.
Max stepped back, and Serena moved into the house. “So, what’s up? I didn’t know you’d be by.”
Ethan hugged his brother and followed Serena inside. “We were in the neighborhood and thought we’d see if you were home for a little visit.”
“We aren’t imposing, are we? We can leave,” Serena said, taking a step back toward the door. Ethan wound his arm around her waist and anchored her to him.
“No. I have no plans today, and I’d love the visit. I was just surprised. That’s all.”
“Do you ever drive down Lake Place Lane?” Ethan asked, and Max nodded. “There’s a house on the right side coming in that just went on the market. Serena and I just put an offer on it.”
Max grinned. “Really? That’s awesome!”
“Max?” Serena asked. “This house is beautiful but really big…”
A sad smile lifted Max’s lip. “It’s too big for me. I guess I’m just hoping that one day I’ll meet the right woman and we’ll start a family. It’s great for family dinner nights, since only Junior and Carter had a place big enough to have the whole family over.”
Ethan nodded. “To be honest, I’m kind of surprised Ryan and Brandy didn’t get a house instead of moving into a different apartment together.”
“Right! Thank you,” Max said with a clap of his hands.
“I’d offer to hook you up with a friend, but I don’t have many of those,” Serena said with an awkward laugh.
Max cringed. “Thank God for small favors. No offense.”
“What about your office assistant? She’s awfully friendly with you,” Ethan said.
Max’s brows rose to his hairline. “Becca? She’s a nice girl but not my type.”
“Big boo—I mean…”
Serena laughed. “What my wonderful fiancé wanted to ask was whatisyour type?”
Max stared off into the distance. “I guess I’m attracted to brunettes with long hair, dark eyes, feminine traits… Oh, and preferably no baggage like demons or vengeful old friends attacking.”
“Har, har, har,” Serena said with a roll of her eyes.
Ethan raised a hand in the air. “Even you have to admit we could all do with a little less drama in our lives.”
Serena crossed her arms under her breasts. “Are you saying I wanted Aja to kill me?”
“You guys hungry? I’m going to order some pizza,” Max said and jumped to his feet. He did not bother waiting for their answers, leaving Ethan to hang himself with the little rope he’d been given.
Ethan rubbed his hands over his face before meeting her green eyes. “Angel, we both know that isn’t what I said.”
Serena smirked as she shook her head. “No, I know that’s not what you meant. Yes to pizza, Max!” she yelled toward the kitchen where Max stared at his cell phone.
“You’re going to keep me on the edge of my seat, aren’t you?” he asked as he pulled her onto his lap.
Serena wrapped her arms around his neck and grinned. “It’s more fun that way, isn’t it?”
Ethan shook his head and kissed her. Her soft body pressed against his, her scent surrounding him, and the gentle tug of his hair had him briefly considering skipping out on pizza with his brother.
“All right, you too. I’m not sure how we went from her about to bite your head off to—never mind. Pizza will be here in thirty.”
Serena broke their kiss and smiled at Max. “I was just messing with him. I agree with both of y’all,” she said and shifted her legs so she could face Max. “We’ve all had way too much drama. So, do us all a big favor and find yourself a nice girl with no history.”
