“Ethan?” Brandy called across the room.
Ethan stepped toward them, his gaze darting back and forth between them until he stood before her. One hand came up in front of him, his palm toward Vanessa, and she forced herself not to withdraw.
“Anyone going to tell me what the hell is going on?” Carter said, his grip tightening around her waist.
“I don’t understand it,” Ethan muttered and looked up at Carter. “You don’t notice it either, do you?”
Brandy appeared at Ethan’s side. “I’m sorry, we’re not trying to upset either of you. It’s just that… You’re different,” she told Vanessa. “May we?”
“Different how?” she asked before placing a hand in each of their palms.
“I thought you said they wouldn’t say anything about how we had sex!”she yelled.
Carter groaned at her side and clasped his head. “That was loud as hell,” he muttered, his brows pinching.
“Oh!” Serena said, joining them. “You two… I see.”
Vanessa glared up at Carter.
“I don’t understand how that happened,” Ethan muttered to Brandy.
She shook her head. “Me either.”
“For the love of all that’s holy, will someone please tell me what the—” Vanessa paused when Katia’s big eyes rounded. “What the heck’s going on?”
Brandy squeezed her hand and smiled. “Somehow, we all sense magic fromyou.”
“And not because you claimed each other,” Ethan said, shaking his head.
“Could her magic have been bound? Like yours, Brandy?” Claudia called.
Vanessa shook her head. “That I’m aware of, my parents are run-of-the-mill, boring, middle-class people.”
“Do you feel different?” Serena asked.
Vanessa met Carter’s eyes, and the worry that had been gnawing on her for the last couple of hours eased. “Actually, yes. We were hoping to compare notes with weird stuff during… you know.”
Ethan squeezed her hand. “Brandy, Serena, or Claudia can help you out there.”
The three of them moved to the couch, Carter not far behind as she was sure he wanted to know as well. Brandy turned toward her as Serena kneeled at her feet.
“Well, for us, the only strange thing would have been at the end. When we came, there were sparks of light and our magic pulsed around us. It was beautiful and crazy,” Brandy said.
“For us, the magic definitely danced, and there were some sparks. Honestly, I barely remember that part because the next part was rather memorable.” Serena smirked and her brows raised suggestively.
“Has anything weird happened since?” Brandy asked. “For me, fire kicked in pretty quick, and I’m an emotional person, so things were going haywire.”
Vanessa thought about it for half a second. “No, nothing.”
The women nodded and looked up at Carter. “Pay attention and see if anything’s changed.” Brandy shrugged. “We really can’t do anything until we know what we’re dealing with.”
“I’mhungwee!” Katia whined, drawing their attention to the little girl.
“Hey! That is not how we ask for food, young lady,” Claudia snapped in her stern mom voice.
Serena chuckled. “Just think what you get to look forward to,” she said as she patted Brandy on the back. “Let’s eat before Katia has to go scavenging.”
The adults in the room chuckled, while the young girl glared with her arms crossed over her chest.
