“Whiny or not, having one of them wouldn’t be a bad thing at all,”Carter said as he helped her from the couch.
Chapter 28
Carter leaned on his elbow, enjoying the sway of Vanessa’s hips as she moved toward the door. “You know, it would be easier to get dressed if your things were in here,” he called.
Her steps faltered, but she never looked back. Once Vanessa was out of line of sight, he dropped to his back and sighed. He did not want to roll out of bed and get ready. No, he wanted to haul his gorgeous woman back into bed and keep her there until she cried out in pleasure at least another three times.
They had made love every night before bed and every morning when they woke. He figured one day, hopefully in the very far future, the need for each other would wane, but until it did, he would lose himself in her as often as he could.
She’d insisted on condoms after the first day they’d had sex. If she was not ready, he had no intention of pushing her. He would only admit to himself that a part of him hoped he had gotten her pregnant the first time. The other part reminded him to not be a caveman about needing to show others his seed was imbedded within her womb.
Baby or not, Vanessa Rayne was his.
Carter rolled out of bed and pushed aside his runaway thoughts. He had not even told her how deep his emotions for her went. He could not bring up a baby and moving in together.
With a quick glance at the time, he made quick work of showering and dressing. With his attention on the button that was making his life a living hell, he heard her approach. He flicked his gaze at the mirror and saw she was leaning against the doorframe in a sexy sundress as she put on a pair of earrings.
“Down, boy, we don’t have time for any funny business.” She grinned.
“Your mouth is saying one thing, but your eyes are begging me to toss you back into bed,” he said, still fighting with the damn button.
Vanessa stepped forward. “Here, let me help you,” she said, brushing his fingers away. “I was thinking that maybe today we can swing by the café? I could really eat one of those croissant sandwich thingies. There, all done. No men were harmed in the buttoning of this shirt.”
Carter cupped her face and lightly brushed his lips against her red-stained ones. “If that’s what you want, then that’s what you get, sweetheart.”
The smile she graced him with melted his heart. There wasn’t anything he would not do for this woman. It was a crazy thought, considering a few months ago she was not on his radar.
His gaze slid to the rumpled bed, and she chuckled. “Down, boy.”
Carter pouted. “I’m sure I’d make it worth your while.”
She rolled to her toes and kissed him. “You always do. Now it’s time to feed me.”
He watched her walk away. “I can’t help but think of all the ways I could take you without removing that dress. You’re killing me...”
She reached the door to his room and rolled her eyes at him over her shoulder. Carter shook his head and peered down at the obvious tent in his slacks. “Sorry, buddy, she doesn’t want to play now.”
Laughter down the hall made him smile as he adjusted himself. Vanessa Rayne was the most perfect woman for him. If only the person who wanted her would show their cards, then they could get rid of the danger and fumble through the rest of their get-to-know-you stage without possible death looming over them.
“Who watches baby Gia when Brandy’s at work?” Vanessa asked, her eyes on the passing scenery.
He ran his hand up her soft thigh as he glanced from the road to Vanessa and back. “She has a nanny.”
“I wonder if it’s hard…” she muttered, her words trailing off.
He could almost hear her mind whirling, but whatever she was thinking was not transmitted to him telepathically. “Wonder if what is hard?” he asked.
“Being a working mom.”
The corner of his mouth raised. “Ah, that’s what this is about. In a couple of weeks, we’ll draw some blood if your period doesn’t come. But as for your question? I’m not sure. I don’t hear Brandy complain, if it helps. I’m sure she’d tell you her pros and cons if you asked.”
Her head barely moved in a nod as she disappeared into her thoughts. Carter did not want her to worry, but he left her to it. Everyone deserved to have a moment or two, and he would give her what she needed.
They parked down the street and walked hand in hand to the café. It was still early enough that the morning crowd had not yet come barreling in, demanding their cup of joe. He held open the door for Vanessa and guided her with a hand on her lower back to the register.
One quick look told him Brandy was either not there or back in the office. They placed their order, but before they could walk down to the pickup area, he wrapped a hand above her elbow. “I’m going to the back for a second to see if Brandy’s here. Will you be okay?”
She smiled. “I’ll be fine.”
