Carter pulled back. His brows pinched before drawing his cell from his back pocket. Three missed calls and over ten texts flashed on his notifications. “I didn’t hear it, sorry.”
“Where’d you go?” Ethan demanded. “One second I felt you, and the next you didn’t exist and then bam, you were back. It was the strangest thing.”
“Let’s go sit. This kitchen is too damn small for all of us,” Serena called.
Once they settled, Carter told them about meeting Daphyne and hesitantly mentioned the portal she had created to the forest. He revealed Daphyne had given them something to drink, leaving out the spring and how it had messed with his magic.
“Are you okay?” Brandy asked.
Carter stared back at the four sets of eyes watching him carefully. “Ifeelfine, but it seems I won’t be needing spellwork to tap into telekinesis anymore. I came here hoping Serena would help me figure out how to access it and to figure out if any other magical abilities were awakened.”
Serena chuckled, and the sound was musical. “It’s clear your family doesn’t do anything like the rest of us. If telekinesis kicked in, there’s always the possibility something else may have. Then again, Max only has his animal communication and telekinesis. A lot of us don’t have a wide variety of natural abilities. I didn’t even think it was possible until Brandy came along.”
Ryan asked for more detail on when his telekinesis had kicked in, and he shook his head. “Yeah, while I understand her mom’s concern and keeping things quiet, her words definitely struck a protective chord with you. Max and Ethan had both tapped into their power the same way.”
“Well, I’d like the quick, quick version of handling it because Daphyne’s working with Vanessa now so she can confront Olsabir,” he stated, his body humming with nerves at the mere thought of her doing it.
“What?” Serena snapped as Ethan said, “That makes a lot more sense now.”
“Huh?” Brandy said.
Ethan scooted forward to the edge of the couch. “Well, I had a vision of Vanessa in front of this white-haired man in a charcoal-gray power suit. It has to be the same guy you’re talking about because his teeth elongated into sharp points and his eyes flashed black.”
Carter lowered his tea to his knee. “When the hell did you have that vision? Were you not going to tell me?”
“Calm down. I only had it on the way here in the car.” Ethan shook his head and sighed. “I wasn’t this bad when Aja was screwing with us, was I?”
Brandy giggled. “You were. I think we all were.”
“Blame our mate bonds. It makes us overreact,” Ryan stated.
Brandy’s giggle turned into a roar of laughter. “You think?” She pointed her thumb toward Ryan. “This one here tried castrating Peter, his own best friend.”
Chapter 33
“How’d it go?”
Vanessa ran a hand over Carter’s cheek and smiled before turning to grab her seatbelt. “I’m exhausted. Why didn’t you tell me using magic wipes you?”
Once the seatbelt clicked into place, she felt Carter release the brake. “I don’t usually overuse it, and it’s been a very long time since I started. I get what you mean though because after working with the family today, I’m beat.”
“How about you feed me something juicy, and we can play show-and-tell?”
“That’s funny because I’d love to play show-and-tell with something juicy—oof.”
Vanessa shook her head at Carter as he rubbed his belly. “As much as I want to play hide the sausage with you, we both know I was referring to our magic, naughty man.”
He cast her a sheepish grin. “I can’t help it, sweetheart. I’ve missed you, and burying myself in you after this long-ass day is all I can think about.”
Vanessa laid her hand on his thigh and ran it up to the zipper. “How about this? You take a scenic route to food, and I mean some fried chicken with mashed potatoes and coleslaw, and I’ll give you a little treat to hold you over until later?”
She smirked at his groan of approval.
“Fuck,I like that a lot…”
The words had come out of her mouth without a thought. She had never given anyone road head before. Looking around the car nervously, she chewed on her lower lip as she questioned her offer.
“No one will see you,” he said, cupping her neck.
