Vanessa nodded, unable to speak through the lump in her throat.

“When we bonded, we must have awakened her half-nymph side,” Carter said before recounting the incident with the lycan. “It was through him we learned Olsabir is who has his hairs on her.”

“Olsabir?” Georgia asked, a brow raised. “That guy’s a joke. Volark was the real deal. This guy’s a wannabe.”

Vanessa tilted her head. “Mom said something like that. What do you know about him?”

“His biggest threat is the people he surrounds himself with. He has a group of tubars who follow him, and a couple lycans. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the packless werewolves do work for hire with him. He’s just trying to look badass, but a strong enough witch would eliminate him from the board easily enough.”

“Mom suggested I confront him. She said if he saw I wasn’t a human threatening to expose the supernaturals, he’d back off.”

Georgia shrugged. “You could. Or we could just get rid of him and his cronies. We really don’t need any more kids falling into the drugs and scams they run… Say,” Georgia said and pushed to her feet. “I’d bet my right tit the person who broke into your store was one of those humans. You mentioned a lycan attack as well. Any others?”

Carter squeezed her waist. “A tubar was lurking around, and Xander got rid of him.”

Georgia clapped excitedly. “See, he started from the bottom and worked his way up. I bet he’ll be the next one to show. If his men couldn’t get to you, he’ll do it himself so he doesn’t look like a pussy in front of them.”

Vanessa turned toward Carter and held his eyes, adrenaline pumping through her. “What should we do?”

Georgia waved her hands in the air. “Duh, let’s take this asshole out so you two can get your happily ever after!”

Carter shrugged. “What does your gut tell you?”

It was not the first time he had asked that question. Earlier, she had felt so much anxiety and turmoil, she could not tune into her bladder, let alone her instincts. Her head bobbed without thought. “I’m tired of living in fear. If he’s going to come after me, I’d rather get to him first.”

He grinned. “And I’ll be at your side. Let me call up Brandy.” Carter pushed to his feet. “Georgia, can I assume you’re in too?”

“Hell yeah, I am. No way am I not protecting this family.”

The air around Vanessa became impossibly still. Carter stopped and turned to stare, his face mirroring hers. Blood rushed through her ears, and a lump the size of Texas lodged in her throat.

Carter cleared his throat first. “What are you talking about?”

Georgia tapped her nose and nodded toward Vanessa. “This one is fertile myrtle right now, and it’s clear you two have been going at it like a pair of bunnies. Unless of course you’ve been wrapping your tool?”

Her words replayed in Vanessa’s head. Could she be pregnant? They had used condoms after the first two times, but they were not foolproof. She and Carter hadn’t been together long. Was she ready to be a mom?

Chapter 36

Carter stared into the distance as Georgia’s words settled. Images of Vanessa round with his child sent a flurry of excitement to his heart.

“Nessie? Are you okay?” Georgia asked, drawing his attention back to his mate—in the now and not the future.

He looked toward her and found her white as a ghost. “Vanessa?”

“Am I pregnant?” she whispered, hope and fear flashing in her eyes.

Georgia grabbed a hand and breathed in deeply. She smiled at Vanessa. “No, honey. If you want to be though, we better get this demon out of your life so you two can get to business.”

Vanessa exhaled a harsh breath and met his eyes.

“I don’t know,”she said.

Carter smiled.“I’m on board for whatever you want, sweetheart. Remember this, we’re in no rush, and I’m not going anywhere.”

His cell vibrated in his hand. “It’s Ethan,” he announced.

“Hey, E, what’s going on?”
