The door chimed when Edward returned, and she wondered if he noticed a similar change. A curious expression flitted across his face before he turned toward the couple.
He cleared his throat and offered a kind smile. “I quite prefer the cactus to the aloe, probably because it’s toxic to my cat.”
The woman’s eyes widened. “They are?”
Edward nodded.
“You don’t have a cat, do you?”she asked, thinking about any signs she may have missed of Edward having a companion.
“I don’t, but I have a feeling they do,”he said, raising a shoulder.
“How’d it go with Claudia?” Mia asked out loud, knowing they could not continue in silence without drawing too much attention.
He smiled and pressed one hip to the counter to face her. “She’s thrilled. She also reminded me family dinner is at their place, and everyone expects you to be there.”
“She did?”
Edward nodded his head. “Everyone’s been pestering me about why you haven’t been there, but that was before everything, so…”
“Are you sure you want—”
Speaking became impossible with the firm press of his lips to hers. Mia gravitated toward him and kissed him back.
“Oh dear, remember when you used to kiss me like that?” the woman said, drawing them back to the present.
“I’d kiss you like that now if you’d let me,” the man replied and wrapped his arm around her shoulders with his free hand.
“I’m so sorry. Did you find everything you wanted?” Mia asked and rolled her lips inward.
“Your beau gave us some advice I hadn’t considered, so yes, as long as you can verify this cactus won’t hurt my Molly.”
Mia smiled. “The only way it can hurt her is if she’s curious and gets too close. Otherwise, no. This cactus isn’t known to be toxic to cats.”
Chapter 25
Edward brought her hand to his lips as he kept his eyes on the road before them. “Quit squirming. It’s not like you haven’t met them all before.”
“But that was beforeeverything. Now that we’ve bonded, it all feels so… so much more, if that makes sense?” Mia asked the window. She had been staring at the passing buildings and trees the entire drive.
Edward squeezed her hand. “I couldn’t have picked a better mate if I’d tried.”
She shifted in her seat to face him, easing some of his own nerves over the upcoming dinner. “Nothing has ever felt more right.”
He grinned. “I agree.”
“Are you sure we shouldn’t have brought something?” she asked, shifting in her seat once more.
“Baby, I’ve already told you. No. My family is huge, and long ago before we started adding all the mates, there was a rule: one person hosted and they either cooked or ordered. In some cases, two people host. I obviously don’t have enough room for everyone, so when it’s my turn, Junior and Debbie tend to help me host.”
“And when is your turn?” Mia asked.
He shrugged. “Whenever Debbie reminds me?”
Mia laughed, and the melody soothed him like no other sound. No, that wasn’t true. The sounds she made when she came all over his dick soothed him like nothing else ever had.
“Seriously?”
Edward let his eyes move to hers before watching the road again. “What? It’s not my fault she likes to keep me informed.”
