Mia cleared her throat a few times, trying to get past the largest lump she had ever experienced. “W-why don’t you take what you found and leave? We’ll both pretend it didn’t happen,” she told him, tears stinging the backs of her eyes.

He lowered the gun slightly, no longer pointing it at her face. She shifted slightly so that in case it accidentally went off in his hands, she did not end up with a bullet in something vital.

“Can’t do that, lady… Now you know what I look like. Shit… shit… shit…”

Mia noted the tremble in his voice. She was considering using her plants to hold him down when a shot fired.

She gasped, and a numbing sensation radiated throughout her abdomen. She lowered her hand and a warm, sticky liquid coated her fingers.

Her gaze raised to his as her mind tried to comprehend what had just happened.

“Shit! See what you made me do?” he yelled.

The teen unraveled before her eyes which caused her heart to speed up. Blood rushed through her ears. “I didn’t pull the trigger,” she said, her voice eerily calm.

“Shut up!” he yelled.

Mia complied, her attention returning to the blood staining her shirt. She sucked in a deep breath to calm her frazzled nerves. She ran her fingers along her side and to the back, finding more blood soaking through.

Images of she and Edward marrying in a field of wildflowers came to mind, followed by her cradling their daughter as she drank from her breast. Tears filled Mia’s eyes at the possibility she wouldn’t get her happily ever after.

Her parents’ faces came to mind, and another piece of her heart broke off.Would losing her cut the last thread holding them to the civilized world?she wondered.

Her knees trembled when pain radiated through her side. The front door flew open, and the teen spun faster than Mia could keep up with. She faced the familiar burst of magic, and her knees buckled at the sight of Edward and Brandy appearing.

“Go check on her. I’ve got him,” Brandy barked to Edward, who was already closing the distance between them.

The moment she was in his arms, her eyelids lowered. “I’m so sorry.”

“I’ve got you, baby. There’s nothing to be sorry for,” he whispered. His hands moved to her bloody side. “Brandy, she’s bleeding!” Edward’s voice shook with fear and anger. “Baby, I need you to stay with me. You’re going to be fine,” he said.

Mia peered at the teen through her lashes and found him frozen in place as Brandy watched on.

“He’s human,” Mia muttered.

Brandy nodded. “He’s a scumbag is what he is. I can hear the cops down the street. I’m guessing someone heard the gunshot… We need to get you to the hospital.”

Red-and-blue flashing lights were becoming brighter by the second. “Did he see you guys?”

Brandy shook her head as Edward lifted her into his arms. “I don’t think he did. I froze him before dropping the shield. As far as he’s concerned, wind blew open the door.”

Mia sucked in a breath and met Edward’s eyes. A storm of emotions swirled in them.“Thank you…”

She shoved her face into his chest as her lips pinched closed. Feeling both the searing pain and the calm over the situation was odd. Her body and mind disjointed as she bled over her shop floor.

“Mia’s been shot,” Edward said.

She sucked in a shallow breath and found Edward with his phone to his ear.

“Okay… Okay…” he said into the phone before dropping it to the ground and meeting her eyes. “Carter’s out of town. I need to lay you down so I can put pressure on this until they can take you to the hospital. You’ve bled so much,” he mumbled to himself as he helped lower her.

“Brandy, get my herbs and make him think you were here,” Mia said before a cry of pain slipped from her.

“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I need to put pressure…”
